I was riding around the test grounds with Jim Bilenda in his Challenger T/A and Jim Walton came screaming by in his petty blue Hemi bird. We were doing about 60 and he went by at about 125. Later,We were sitting at the bottom of the down hill grade and Jim came down so fast he bottomed the bird out on the blacktop.
We caravaned up with several cars ( no trailers ), one was a black 1972/73 charger with a home made nose cone and rear wing made of balsa wood. at hiway speeds the wing would sway back and forth 6 inches or more.
I'll have to dig my pictures out this weekend.
That was the 1st year I met the current owner of the Cuda I'm restoring now.
Enjoy life today, It has an expiration date

Mopar Nats

I believe they were started by Gary Rollins and his Rapid Transit Club out of Detroit.
COOL PICS
I bought a car off Gary Rollins in the early 80's. He had a few cars for sale at a Swap meet at the Michigan Stae Fairgrounds. I bought a 72 Challenger, rally, some dull yellow color with glass packs, stink bug stance and N50's. THOSE were the days. I painted it black laquer. Nice car till a drunk kid drove UNDER it while I was sleeping in my apt across the street from a topless bar in Detroit.
Gary had an in dustrial building in Detroit off Joy Rd and the Southfield Freeway (for people in the area). I remember he had some OK cars in ther. Nothing real high end except a customized ssilver Superbird and a ton of parts.
He was 20 years older than me if I remember correctly. Would put him in his 60's. Is he still around?

Excellent thread! I have been trying to find and slowly begin organizing my "photo archives" for the last two weeks or so... I did not attend the 1981 national meet, but attended the 1982 Chrysler Car Club Convention in St Louis as my first national meet. The first two national meets were called "Chrysler Car Club Conventions" and hosted by a loose confederation of Mopar clubs called the Chrysler Car Club Council IIRC. The group included the Rapid Transit System, Mopar Muscle Club (forming under the NHOA at that time), National Hemi Owners Association, Special Interest Auto Club, and a few others I believe. Eventually I hope to have all my old pictures organized and scanned in, but that will take years because I estimate there are about 10,000 pictures... maybe more. On the St Louis trip in 1982 some friends and I drove up from San Antonio, Texas in a 1969 Hemi GTX and a friend's 1970 Hemi `Cuda. Although I took over 400 pictures on the trip, I have given away about half the prints to other attendees and the former owner of the drag strip we used (Mid America?). My first picture is a new scan with me and the Hemi GTX at the Headquarters Hotel (Holiday Inn) sign... Allen
