Over the years I have put any number of heads on my 87 318, stock 302's, 915's, even 315's all with 4bbl intakes, stock Tquad style and Edelbrock Performer.
On the 318 there was NEVER enough difference to justify the cost of the gaskets. All stock, untouched heads.
The only combo that made a substantial difference, to me, was the 360 with 302 heads. But I wouldn't spend more than the cost of a gasket set on a 302 swap myself.
On a mild build the port mismatch between a 4bbl intake and a "318 head" is unnoticeable. If you think you notice it you are fooling yourself.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

Im going to fill my combustion chambers with JB weld to lower the cc on my 360 heads. Then they will work perfect on my 318.
I really hope you are kidding.
If you can repair a cracked cylinder wall with it then why cant you fill a combustion chamber with it?

It would "blow" right apart the first time you fired it up. You'd never be able to repair a cylinder wall with it either. A water jacket maybe. Its best used where theres no pressure, or very low at least, being applied to it. I've fixed cracked crankcases on motorcycles with it but it was only holding back the oil and theres no pressure on it and its not required to have any structural strength where I put it.

I would pop those 920 casting heads on it and not think twice about the hardened seats (or lack there of). I have seen lots of mopar people running non-hardened seat heads without any problem. I ran a 6 dart for years with those 67 heads and when it finnaly spun a bearing the heads still looked great. They out flow the 302 head and they have slightly smaller chambers. You will not regret putting them on there. Also I would not worry about the port mismatch, been there done that and it was no issue at all.
Yeah Dave I rolled those 920's around today and they sure have a sweet looking combustion chamber. Shame they didnt retain it into a 2.02/1.60 head. No doubt with them I sure wouldn't lose any squeeze and you would think I'd pick up a better quench area. Heck might pick up some compression actually. I havent got a chance to look at a 70's 318 head yet to compare to. I should have some sitting around somewhere to get a peak at tomorrow.
Thank you. I was wondering about that. Something to think about since my 318 is 9.2.1 but, that's not the actual ratio.

the bolt locations for the AC on the mag head are the same as the LA's, it's just the lower one where the alternator attaches that is in a different plane.
stock mags don't have the heat crossover either

I agree. The top of the combustion chamber is a very hot and violent place. Nothing is hard enough there except pure metal (so far as I know, nobody is making plastic heads yet). And my bet is that when the JB comes off in chunks, those chunks will be hard enough to break holes in your aluminum pistons. Don't try it unless you really don't care about ruining the engine.
Ive used a dremel and put W shape cuts at an angle in the combustion chambers. This will prevent the JB Weld from falling out. Ill post up some pics later! Hopefully in a week Ill have the heads ready to install. Ill be sure and keep everyone updated as to how it goes. Once I perfect this I plan on starting a business. I think it would really catch on as a cheap alternative to other ways of bumping compression.

1967 318 LA 920 Castings. I cc'ed them real quick tonight and got 63cc's on the one in the picture. But now I see why the 318 heads cc a little smaller than 360 heads too. The combustion chambers are smaller diameter. So that would account for a late model open chamber 318 being less than a 360 of a similiar year by a small ammount. I was looking at a 675 casting 318 and noticed it. It looks like they used those 675's on 318's from 1968-1974 so that would answer a question further back about are 1968 heads open chamber. Yep. I didnt get a chance to cc one of them. I will just for general purpose sometime this week.

Thank you for the response. I look forward to see what your findings are on the later heads. Take care.
