Yes, I could find out myself... but I'm sure you'd love to help me even with an easy thing.

Oh: It's an 1970 Challenger with 440 in.

The blue box is the ignition module, the black box is the voltage regulator.

Is the stuff on the firewall coming from the ignition box above it? if so its getting real hot and melting the potting out the back.

Otherwise its probably seam sealer or rustproof stuff that was on there and maybe weeping out with the heat.

Outcast Dodge guy.

What he said about the Blue being ignition and the black voltage regulator.

The goo running down the firewall is from the sealer they put on the circuits. If you flip the box over it is open on the back and they fill it with a rubber like stuff. It will eventually start to melt and leak out from age. It does not mean the part will not work but it will continue to leak worse and worse until you replace it or it dies on it's own. I have used them oozing for years but I would replace it to keep the firewall clean.

That 'goo' will run out even if the part is not hooked up, just takes enough heat. If you ever have an extra one laying around your garage, try to store it face down, otherwise you may not get it off the shelf you set it on!

This may not be as much an issue where you live though (it gets HOT here in TX)......

Oh boy - another sick part

It comes from the ignition unit - that stuff is soft and near liquid. As raisin like said. Although there are just about 80 deg F in the Garage.

No way to save it? Is it all around the important stuff? Electronic poured in?

Or is it recommendable to replace it anyway? Against a stock part? (I never had to deal with such an ignition...).

Is it a part that runs or runs not - or is it a part that I should search and read all posts about???

You have a generic electronic ignition conversion on your Challenger.(probably from Summit) Challengers didn't come with electronic ignition in 1970. That module was used on Challengers from 72-74. They didn't mount dirrectly to the firewall either. They mounded to a bracket that spaced the module away from the firewall to eliminate some heat.

This is a common upgrade. If you are going for a stock look, you'll have to go back to the points style ignition. If you just want to replace the module, get the "chrome" one. The qualilty of the "orange" boxes has gone down hill in the last few years. You can also get one from a parts store...it's up to you.

For a resto, yes. FBO makes a better ECU. Mopar orange boxe quality has been questioned lately. If its a stock or mild build, an aftermarket generic ECU would probably do.

Chrome box mounted on bracket from Rocket Resto. Hides it a bit Mounts to back of valley pan. Has slots to alow the heat to get out. Hides it a bit to keep under hood looking more stock. Works great.
