I'm in need of the correct way (instructions) on installing a flip-top gas cap on my 1970 Challenger. I would like to do this right, so any advice/ diagrams anyone might have would be greatly appreciated!

It's a very simple procedure.

1. Remove your existing cap.

2. Remove & keep the 4 screws that you see. They
hold the filler neck to the inside of the 1/4 panel.

3. Place the trim ring over the opening, so that the 4 holes in the trim ring line up with the 4 holes where you removed the screws. The depression on the ring goes to the rear of the car, and the "flipper" handle on the cap goes in the depression.

4. Place the flip cap over the trim ring, again lining up the 4 holes.

5. Replace the 4 screws.

6. Find an inner cap to actully keep the gas from sloshing out. The flip cap is nothing more than decoration.

7. You are done...

One note: The directions above are for if you have a factory 1/4 panel. If you replced the 1/4 panel with an aftermarket one, all bets are off. They are notorius for having an improperly shaped opening for the cap. If that's the case, good luck. I had that problem, and it required some "re-engineering".

Funny thing- the 4 screws look like rivets.

When I installed one on my 73 Challenger years ago, they were 4 Phillips-headed screws. They were so easy to remove that someone stole my cap... I've since replaced them with tamper-proof screws.

If yours are rivets, someone has modified things, and I don't know what advise to give you.

how do you keep the trim ring from ratteling? Also is there a gasket between the body/trim ring?

You need to bend the tabs to keep it from rattling, and there should be 4 screws. No gasket.

My 68 Barracuda has some very odd tamper-resistant screws for the flip top cap. I've seen them on others(O.E.) as well. I got them off (and back on) with some needle nose-vise grips.
Edit-mine has only 3 screws holding it on and has a foam gasket between the body/cap

This is what it looks like with a stock locking cap, they are very rare nowadays and if you have one, the rubber is usually cracked and it'll leak. The lock is also easy to break/wear out on a stock one.
The 71 fuel tanks and up are designed to keep slight pressure in the tank and the fill cap should seal tight and not be vented...pressure-vacuum.

This is what it looks like with a aftermarket locking cap. It's what I use.

Here's part numbers for Car Quest locking caps. Napa or someone like that may be able to cross that number for you.

Lastly use this picture to help you get the right cap for your filler neck. The 35012 is on the left in this picture.
