Just tossing around the idea of a 5.7 Hemi swap. I am still on the fence about a 5.9 Magnum engine but, looks like I would have to more to the 5.9 to get it to work with my 68 B-Body basically changing heads, cam, oil pan and not to mention I would have to change my 904 since B&M no longer is making the Magnum/904 flexplates. I have been trying to research this and see it is mixed on what to buy and where to go.
I do have access to a cheap truck engine with the ECU but, I am looking to go the carburetor route since I already have a good carburetor. Just wondering how much it can be done for estimated and what parts work well and what doesn't? Thanks in advance.

why would you need to change the cam and heads from a 360 magnum? A 360 or 5.9 is basically a drop in replacement for a 318 especailly if you are going with a carb. I think you can use your 318 pan as well. As for the flex plate, I'm sure you can find one at a show/swap meet or on e-bay. If nit maybe a machine shop could make yours work. Exhaust would also bolt right up from 318 to 360.

Price out the 5.7 hemi stuff, then come back to your post. Go check out what a 5.7 hemi oil pan for our old cars costs. Also to run a carb, you still need an electronic spark control system because there's no provisions to run a distributor. That's not a cheap setup either.

I bought a Magnum to 904 flexplate from CRT (Cope Racing Transmissions)earlier this year. Check with them!

I have a 5.7 complete with trany, computer, harness, fully loaded with all accesories, and belts and hoses for my challenger. I estimate that the parts to install it will be in the $4000 neighborhood if I'm lucky. Headers $900, motor mounts about $250 if I remember right, oil pan $350 or so, drive shaft $??, fuel pump, fuel lines, trany lines, radiator, fuel tank, power steering pump that won't blow out my steering box, air intake, floor pan mods, trany crossmember fabrication, and an unknown amount of little odds and ends that are sure to pop up. A lot of this can be modified to fit a budget, but it still won't be cheap.

DRIVE EM, DONT HIDE EM.

I am in the middle of a 5.7 swap into my 66 coronet. I am keeping my original 727. Your gonna drop $1000 in a wiring harness alone. I don't think the factory one can be used if you keep the old transmissions. Due to my 727 being the old 19 spline type, I had to have a custom torque convertor made to work with the flex plate that I had to buy. The power steering set up is gonna run about $500 for hoses, pump, fittings etc. I found my engine for $1700 with 37,000 miles on it. It is from a 2005 truck. The computer for the trucks with automatics can't be used unless it's flashed, but the 2003-4 manual transmission truck computers can be used without being modified. They are very hard to find. I am re-using the truck exhaust manifolds to keep from dropping $800 on headers (FYI - headers flow only about 2% more than the stock manifolds)I don't know if they will work for your car. I found a kit for adding an in tank fuel pump to my original gas tank for about $250. I still haven't figured out my gameplan on the radiator. Even staying on the cheap, I bet I will have a solid $6000 in this engine swap before it's done.

Thanks guys. No worries on the A/C or even power steering as I don't have those on my car. On the Hemi I would use the Jeep GC manifolds. My only concern with the 360 Magnums would the cracked OEM heads. However, I have located a 51k mile engine from a 2002 Durango in that respect. Also, with the cam I suggested that so it will keep running better in the high RPMs but, if I read correctly the later 360 Magnums got a better cam? Say around 2001 or 2002 MY.
Anyways, my main for even considering the 5.7L Hemi is because of the upper RPM pull even with a stock cam and the lighter weight. Thanks again everyone?

never heard of a head cracking problem. my 95 Dakota has 150k on the 5.2 and will still burn thru 3rd and chirp 4th. You can get a bigger roller cam from any speed shop. My best et's come at a 5-5200 shifts.
