I'm wondering if there is a way to do this on a '69 GTX? The factory tach reads higher than the engine is actually turning.
Thanks for any help.

Are you using an MSD all in one distributor without the seperate ignition box?
I added the box and the tach problem was resolved.
Maybe you have a similar situation.

Factory orange ECU. Nothing special. Tach works great but reads about 800 rpm higher than actual at idle and seems to multiply as rpm increases.

I calibrated mine in my 69 GTX. You have to remove the tach from the dash. It's the only way.

Jump the two dash wires to the correct leads on the tach plus a ground wire.

There are 2 clock springs that are used to calibrate it. The front one controls low speed and the back one controls high speed. The springs are obvious once you take it apart.

If you need more info, I'll dig up my instructions and mail them to you.

I have the same problem with my Challenger when I went from points to electronic. I have read you need a tach adapter but I don't know which one or where to find it.

I have had the same problem with my 72 340 Cuda after a points to an orange electronic ignition upgrade.

Is this the same proceedure for the tach in a 1966 Charger? If so I would appreciate the info as well. Contact me at darryl@sedonarental.com please.

Why is that. I have used a couple of his tach kits and the worked great.

did this on my 68 RR with little success, have to remove from dash and jump wire it like stated above, i remember only one pot adjust screw on it and it was a trade off between low to high rpm accuracy. If you need it to be spot on i think i would have the modern internals installed by one of the gauge restorers. I decided to adjust the lower RPM's for better accuracy.

Maybe buying a kit would be ok, I made the mistake of sending something in for repair. The WORST experience I have EVER had.

When a vendor says they won't accept credit card payments because too many people have reversed the charges, it should throw up a HUGE warning sign.

I was stupid, just trying to help others not make the same mistake.

I got my circuit board from Brent Ball. Excellent service and communications.

The factory tach in my 1971 R/T Challenger is also about 800 rpm high.

I want to keep the interior looking stock so an aftermarket tach is out.

I've heard good reviews about the repop factory looking E-body tachometers so instead of spending big $$$ trying to get my factory tach upgraded or rebuilt I plan to try a new one from Dante's.

Maybe try one of the repop B-body tachometers.

I asked Dante if the repop ebody ralley tachs would adjust for eletronic ignition and he said they need an adopter...

Everything I've read leads to a tach adapter. But which one?

In reading Charger Specialties website it says their tachs will work with all types of ignitions, no mention of needing an adapter...I'll have to send them an E-mail.

"All of our tachs are made with modern electronics and will work with points, electronic, MSD and other ignition systems.

all come with a one year warranty and are made in the USA!"
