trying to finish up my AAR to sell.the rear end is out and K member.I've started to wash the underside with kerosine.come to find out under the grease is the red and gray dip primer.the car had a trunk pan installed and the rest is really clean.there was black paint that was on over the primers, the center hump back to the area over the axles .I was told they never painted them, so i washed it all off.now all that is left is this dip primer.should i paint the underneath or live it the primer and pressure wash off with some type of grease remover.(grease lighting).I dont want some one to think im hiding anything, but i want it to look good. Any help??

I was once told that the AAR/TAs wear painted flat black/organisol on the underside above the mufflers. I have been told on here that that is wrong. I sure would like to have seen pics and have it documented, but I guess you said its gone now. Anyway common beliefis that the entire underside was gray primer with only body colored over spray as you would expect from halfass painting the rocker panels and engine compartment. Maybe someone else can chime in, I know Troy has done extensive documentation on the T/A he built.

Troy's T/A was always a So Cal car, basically one owner, with like 40K miles or something. He has like a thousand "before" carefully cleaned archeological type pics of his car.

And get a copy of Barry Washington's pictures from the ultra low mile Yellow T/A. Someone spray bombed the underside yellow on that car, but if you look close I hear it's very helpful.

If no rust NOTHING is better than what the factory applied. No way you could ever duplicate the protection of the Randsburg electro static primer.

Wash it with a soft brush and nothing stronger than Dawn detergent.

Amazing how an unchallenged lie can become the absolute truth.

Mr. J,
Standox epoxy primer would give it a run for it's money!! (If not exceed it's protection.) If the original stuff is still in place and well preserved, I would also say to leave it.

Doctor W.

I have no doubt that the primer is good, however why remove the factory dip and primers and expose virgin metal if you do not have to. I can see the primer going over the top of the original factory stuff if it does not clean up to ones satisfaction. In fact, that is probably what I am going to do with the Valentines day Panther Pink Challenger, except I am toying with the idea of using a UV cured primer, as it is very thin.

If your just going to do a "quickie" I would not do anything to the bottom. Let the next owner do it the way they want to.

Here are a few pictures of what I did.

Troy,
I'm sure you've been told but you did a fantastic job on your T/A. I hope when I'm ready to do the underside of my TA that I can count on you for your expertise.

The only black paint that I found was on the mufflers and on the pinch weld with overspray going back to the center of the car. With much research by myself, ECS and BeepBeep I found out that the pinch weld was painted with a brush and then sprayed black.

Doctor?!? We are all in trouble now! I agree 100% Mr. J. That is why I started this at the end of my post:

"If the original stuff is still in place and well preserved, I would also say to leave it."

*You have to read everything Mr. J in order for things to make sense.*

By luck I was having a little exhaust repair done Friday and saw this thread. My car is 39K miles unrestored. I looked at the underside while on the lift and it looks like to me that the gray is everywhere as in the restored car pictures. Nowhere near as nice but basically the same. Nothing special behind the mufflers. Minimal overspray of body color around the rocker areas.

This was a real eyeopener to me. I prefer the cars original or restored to original. How many of these are now "over restored" with the underside painted the same as the body color. Everyone I see being sold by dealers or on ebay has the bottom painted incorrectly. Please, no one take offense.
