Had the same problem a while back .. swapped the 906s out for a set of 915s and milled them 30 .. It runs strong now with a 280 480 cam using 93 pump gas ..
If it's not a big block i'll just walk..

Anybody have a 71 440 sitting around with the heads off? Can you tell me how far below the deck the pistons are? Thanks Terry
Well, this is what I don't get. My engine is out of a 71 Newport, a 4bbl, dual exhaust engine. Took the heads off a few years ago and measured the pistons with a straight edge and a feeler gauge. That's all I had. Pistons measured 0.020 on one side and 0.025 on the other side, in the hole.
That is why you need to have a block;s deck hieght corrected when you do a rebuild. That makes the deck the same all the way around. The little diffence you saw there likely wouldn't change much in the way of performance in a stocker though.
I didn't make my point clear. I see several people posting 0.60 or more in the hole. Was wondering why my '71 engine was closer to 0.020 in the hole. I realize that if I wanted major performance I need to deck the block to make them even, and to also raise compression. But like you said, for a mild build for cruising, it's fine.

Your BLUEPRINT spec is an NHRA number , ACTUAL factory blueprint is closer to the actual .050 in the hole .
Of course. It was implied and I presumed that everyone would understand.
The pistons were part number L2286. I purchased them in 1990.
I wouldn't presume anything , I see way to many people quote NHRA blueprint as actual factory delivered.

might check the deck surfaces as Mopar factory milling machines leave straight marks whereas most machine shop equipment leaves circular marks. Might help you determine if it has been surfaced sometime in it's life

I'd think anything over .500 is dicey, I had the "six pack" rockers with my 509 cam and it speared the rockers twice after about a year.
Higher spring pressure = more wear on the stamped rockers.
That is the main reason I swapped over to a mechanical cam

According to Hughes Engines, stock rockers will work fine with their Whiplash cam that has 0.518" lift.

Well sure Hughs is gonna say that, They want to sell a cam.
IMO, stock rockers are fine for stock cams, if your gonna spin it harder on the race track sometimes, it needs better rockers. "You can pay now, or pay more later".

I ran a .533 320 duration for years with stock rockers and adjustable pushrods (heads were milled .060) ran a best of 11.86 with them @ 3850.

I see. So, Hughes Engines is lying to me. I'll have to confront them on that.

Oh it will work, the question is for how long.
I had brand new Mopar Performance 6-pack rockers with zero miles using the recommended MP spring with the .509 cam.
