You'd want a set of 68-69 pistons. Mine were .050 in the hole. Dave

I haven't seen a direct replacement 68-69 piston EVER , and .050 is too far in the hole still . Buy a 2.065 CH piston.

I have a set of forged replacements, but they are pretty old. With the deck trued, they we about 0.039". Blue printed I think they are about 0.027". You'd need to cut the deck more to get a decent quench with a closed chamber head.

That must be a very old piston then because since I started paying attention to these thing within the last decade that piston has not existed in the aftermarket.

Or just buy the 6pk replacement piston with the 2.065 CH and square the deck . Your BLUEPRINT spec is an NHRA number , ACTUAL factory blueprint is closer to the actual .050 in the hole .

HP or 6pk ?

Either way don't go building back to factory spec , they didn't have a clue what they were doing back then except for the HEMI

What head are you using , I think I missed that ?

Open chamber , no quench unless you do some serious work .

I guess I should go back and read your goals before offering any more advice .

On a engine like this the ability to run regualr or the garbage premium we now have is a real plus. The key is to get the timoing right and in witha s much as it can take total. Try to start with 43-44 degree's total no vac and get it in at convertor stall or tad later and with some carb work you can make a pig fly! By the way when gas is $4+ a gallon its a plus

Of course. It was implied and I presumed that everyone would understand.

The pistons were part number L2286. I purchased them in 1990.

If budget is no concern, then of course a 2.060 or greater CH piston is the best choice when combined with a set of closed chambered heads. I will say you will NOT regret shelling out the extra $300 for a set of KB237's and having your rotating assy balanced for them, it will give you a MUCH better base for future performance mods.

However, I ran a lunati voodoo 60303 in my smogger 76 440 with pistons that measured .150 in the hole. It ran decent and burned up the tires nicely AFTER I spend some quality time tuning the carb and recurving the distributor. That combo loved a lot of initial timing, near 20*. Also had a set of 440source heads on it.

If I was in your shoes and decided a piston change is not an option, I would take a look at the Hughes Whiplash cams. Supposed to be designed with lower CR motors in mind.

Just trying to use what I have for now and have another 440 on the engine stand for a later time or car. I've never driven my charger. It has a 383 in it now and I should've had the 440 in and driving 3 years ago. I'm getting pretty slow at making non runners drivers these days. I will probably use what I have for now and put this engine in. Its been raining up here like crazy for the last 2.5 months and its already the middle on June. Thanks Terry

Anybody have a 71 440 sitting around with the heads off? Can you tell me how far below the deck the pistons are? Thanks Terry

If I had a good engine and the the only problem i had was the pistons were that far down, it wouldn't stop me from running it. it won't run as good as a high comp engine, but it will still provide many miles of fun for no extra money or effort.

I have a similar combo to Daytona turbo and love it. I had to reuse the pistons that were in my block (I'm a student with limited cash resources -- and that will become no cash resources once my funding runs out in August if I can't find a job). Those pistons are .100 in the hole. It ain't pretty. But I do have Eddy heads that I milled a bit to get the compression near to 9.2:1. And I run the Lunati 60303 cam as well.

The BIGGEST thing was setting up the dizzy and I was able to do that with help here. I had to slow down the mechanical advance a lot over how it came, I had to cut the total advance down to 30* and take most of the vacuum advance out of it as well. It loves initial timing but that's about it. It runs great and doesn't ping. I have to be careful to drive it with some sense because I really can't afford new rear tires.

Well, this is what I don't get. My engine is out of a 71 Newport, a 4bbl, dual exhaust engine. Took the heads off a few years ago and measured the pistons with a straight edge and a feeler gauge. That's all I had. Pistons measured 0.020 on one side and 0.025 on the other side, in the hole.

Back in the 80`s I had a 70 challenger with a stock 440 that it came with from the factory. I
put the lower compression pistons in it due to lower octane gas. It did reduce low in power but was still a very fun car to drive. If you got it & don`t want to spent any more money. Put it in & let her eat. Have some fun.

That is why you need to have a block;s deck hieght corrected when you do a rebuild. That makes the deck the same all the way around. The little diffence you saw there likely wouldn't change much in the way of performance in a stocker though.
