Got an ATI Super Damper and it's on all the way but the stock crank bolt seems short now. I can get it in but it does not thread in too far so does everyone get a longer crank bolt? You would think in the directions they would tell you that or supply one.

Thanks for any insight.

Russ

Which motor? I have bought longer 3/4 grade bolts to use in some of the three ring ATI dampeners, you really only need 3/4 inch thread engagement to keep it on once it is torque properly with blue Loktite

Yes my stock bolt was also to short. Used a grade 8 out of a ladder bar with some blue lock tight. Yes it would be nice if they told you that you would possibly need a longer bolt.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

Yep I think I ended up with a 1 1/4 long bolt but it was a hair to long.. Its a standard NF thread Russ, and should be available at your local harware store. I simply used a Grade 8 Bolt with some Blue locktite.

When you going to have that beast ready?

use one out of a small block, same thread pitch just longer.

my sb bolt was not long enough for my ATI either and when I called ATI they said oh yeah you need a longer bolt that we sell.
I also used an extra I had for my ladder bars

Just figure out how long a bolt you want and go down to your friendly CAT dealer, every bolt they sell is grade 8 or better. Dave

Yep I used a small bock one outa Hughes engines, and You will also fint the pulleys wont line up either. I used a lower pulley from DMI, outa mancinni racing, and a stock upper. I had to shim out the upper pulley 1/16 to line wvwrything up.

You have to change to the longer bolt. Mancini Racing carries it.

So.....I just had this very issue and now the end of my crankshaft is a messed up along with my ATI balancer hub. I may need to pull the motor to fix it in the middle of the season. And all ATI says is buy another bolt?

Eagle crankshaft.....$895 ATI damper.....$385 Damaging both because of a boneheaded engineering move and putting the wrong damper bolt in the kit.......priceless! Man, sometines this racing crap gets real old.

ARP makes a couple of different crank bolts for Mopar engines. The longer one is 2.200 inches UHL and should work with an ATI damper.

We have a selection of grade 8 bolts with varying lengths for different dampners and cranks. We install the dampener in each application and measure the depth of the crank bolt hole to the face of the dampner register. We select the bolt and washer combo that will give us a minimum of the bolt diameter in thread engagement or more but careful not to bottom out the bolt or pull the thread from the crank. On a side note,we use a aluminium spacer between our puller as to not damager the crank snout or threads when removing the dampner.

Thanks for both Andy's and Bob's explanation on the crank bolt on the ATI dampner. But....I have a crankshaft that was new 41 runs ago. And the reason I don't build my own motors anymore, is because I spend too much on parts to make a mistake and ruin these parts in the middle of the season, and I can't afford to replace them right now. It's not that I am looking to blame someone, but I paid a reputable builder to assemble this engine 41 runs ago. And I have a hard time blaming him when 2 other reputable builders used the same bolt with the same dampner prior to this guy building this engine. For some reason, this time it came loose. I am not sure, now that it has the longer bolt, that it will not rattle loose again because of the chatter marks on the cranshaft and dampner. So, that's why I don't know where to turn to fix this, or if the longer bolt will keep things in tact. You can't blame ATI because it should have been checked. And you can't blame the builder because that's the way it came. It's just frustrating to me every time this type of thing happens.

I understand what you are saying but ----- your engine builder should have checked this before just putting it together. That is the reason I asked this question in the first place... I checked it and it didn't look right so I inquired about it and now I have the answer and will get the right bolt. And yes it would have been easier if they would have told me when I ordered it that I needed to use a longer bolt or for a couple $$$ more just add it in with the damper.

But a good experienced builder would have made the correction.

But.....3 different builders didn't catch it.

And I am glad you posted the question, otherwise I wouldn't have been sure what the issue was. That's why I appreciate site like Moparts!

i'm sorry Tom but imho i would blame the builder, point blank. if you're installing a component and there's not enough thread engagement it should be corrected, that's engine building 101. nobody's perfect but coming from an engine builder that is unacceptable, coming from three it's borderline sabotage. i ran into this issue on the very first aftermarket damper i installed. iirc at the time arp didn't have anything listed for the mopar and i ended up using a PN from another engine. not to fan the flames but personally i'd be having words with someone.
