Can anyone shed some light on this subject. Unfortunately the car I'm working on was in pieces , so I have nothing to go by. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

No I don't believe any cars came with a H pipe.

Our documentation show that the only h-pipe equipped 1971 "B" body cars were the 426 hemi powered applications. However, we have had customers call and order h-pipes for their 71 440 powered cars claiming that they wanted to replace the original h-pipe that was still on the vehicle. Parts manuals list a right and left headpipe only for these 440 cars so if anyone shows a parts manual that lists an h-pipe we would like to see it. Like the old saying goes "never say never with Mopar".

Yes they did (on some).
I will see if I can dig up an older post on this board and the Roadrunner Nest where it was discussed in length. There was a change over later in the year where the factory started to use seperate headpipes. I owned a '71 U-code GTX that still had it's original H-pipe with the factory flattened areas. It had a SPD of Dec 17th 1970. A few other members have survivor cars that still have the OEM H-pipes. We compared our Broadcast sheets and the cars with H-pipes listed this in the front pipe boxes:

EXHAUST
LT RT
00 01

The cars equipped with regular headpipes had:

EXHAUST
LT RT
93 76

'70 Super Bee 440 6 pack 4-spd 4.10 Dana N96 EB5
‘70 Super Bee 440 6 pack 4-spd 3.54 Dana FC7
‘70 ‘Cuda 440+6bbl 4-spd 3.54 Dana N96 EB5 V1W

As far as a part # for the H-pipe, I guess we would need someone with a '71 parts book as the later books do not list it as available. I would have to assume that the part # will end in 01...

I have a parts books and for 1971 it only list part numbers 3644994 and 3466995 as the two head pipes. So it appears according to the book no H pipes.

When you say during the year there was a change, do you mean it started as an H pipe and then went to two separate pipes. Because in my book for the 1970 b bodies it list only one part number 3404802.

Yes, from the sample cars and sheets we had, it seemed that the H-pipes started off the production of the '71 B-body U and V-code cars then sometime in Jan '71, the seperate heapipes were the norm.

Great information. Looks like I posted on the original Moparts discussion but I guess I didn't follow up or my memory isn't what it used to be. No comments please

My car's spd is 523 so looks like no H pipe for me.

Many thanks

H pipe part number for 1971 was 346646 and 3466994-5

While it does say 426, it was also installed on 440 some motors.
Here is a picture of the parts book sheet

that is why it is so upsetting to read the many posts on Moparts that the person posting is told....

"He is wrong"
"He doesn't know what he is talking about"
"I have never seen a car like that so none were ever made"
"Until you show me proof I will not believe you"

This is all Bull, there were so many variations back then and unless you pulled the parts and assembled the car yourself, you only have an assumption based on a BS or FT....
Granted there are some really knowledgeable people here on Moparts that have accumulated many years of pictures and documentations and have seen and examined many cars out there, they have findings that are worthy but not 100% accurate, really, unless they were there back then, bets are all off.....

I will give you an example:
I bought a 71 GTX from the original owner, he ordered the X and waited for it to be delivered. He has owned it all this time until I purchased it. When I purchased it we spent time talking about the car and and the history of what he did with it and the problems he had with it. He even kept the original factory installed tires and rims he removed when he installed the slotted mags on the X back in 71. When I bought the car he surprised me be putting them back on the car for me. Well the X is a 4sp so the carb listed for it should be 4967S, well it isn't, it is a 4968S, this is an Auto carb.
I have been called an idiot and I do not know what I am talking about by a so called expert here on Moparts, he said no way that carb was installed on your car, show me the documentation that it was installed..... Bullsh-it, to you and to all that think that way.....

I better stop and turn the rant off, step off the soapbox and have a cup of coffee..

Nick,
I agree with you. I had a similiar situation with an auto carb on my 4 speed car from the factory, amongst others.

It would be nice if someone had an earlier version of the parts book which could confirm what the conclusion is, that earlier up to Jan 71 it was an H pipe with only one part number then to the two part numbers mentioned above.

Wow! Did'nt know some were so passionate about exhaust. Thought we were the only ones. Up to about 2 years ago when a 71 440 "B" body exhaust system was ordered we automatically sent the customer an h-pipe exhaust system thinking that this was correct. Then we got straightened out by a few 71 "B" experts in the field concerning what was correct regarding the exhaust. We had no way to prove otherwise by either documentation or by reviewing existing survivor cars. So now we automatically send (2) headpipes unless a customer opts for an optional h-pipe for 71 440 applications. So far this has made most people happy and has kept us out of hot water with the experts. Either way put what you want on the car because most people would'nt know the difference.

My old 71 GTX with a 440-4/auto had a factory H pipe. It was a texas car but built in St. Louis.

My current is also a survivor exhaust system with an H pipe. Also 440-4/auto.
