I am going LS1 in my old Torana..and I have a sheet aluminum fuel tank for it (repo of the original Bathurst race, long-range style ones) and thinking I will probably go inline pump with it...just working on the engine bay side of the swap now..will get to the fuel system once I get the engine in




I actually looked at using the tank from the 2000 - I bought it because it's strangely close to the shape of an A-body tank, except for no kickout in the tank for the spare tire well. My measurements indicated that it would fit length, width, and depth-wise in an A-body if you turned it around 180* from the F-bod orientation, so it was worth a shot. I ended up ditching the project because the fuel filler tube was now on the wrong side for an A-body, and I didn't want to relocate the filler cap OR have huge runs of large DIA fuel hose inside the trunk of the car.

The 99-down F-bods don't use the same neat swirl pot design which is what I really want to keep out of that experiment. Push comes to shove, I suppose I could sort out a way of butchering the top of the pump to adapt a 99-down top and lock ring, but the point of all this was to be able to stop in to a parts store out in BFE Nevada and ask the counter monkey for fuel pump they might actually have.

I'll have to give Eric a shout, as I don't know this GM stuff very well. Is that his username as well?

I got to know abit about the later F bodies after building This and having had a bunch of other ones in the past. (Just built another 2000 model one in Oz that is on it's way here)

On the fuel filler issue with the plastic tank (turned around 180 that is) you could always move the filler on the car to the other quarter panel

I am looking around now for a wrecked 2000+ one with a 6 speed for the Torana, I can get some pics and measurements if you like of the tank, pump assembly,etc when I get to it.

I've got a PM in to Eric already and he's looking in to some options for me, and I also spied an option at nastyperformance.com if I can get them to sell me piece of their custom tank separately. I would obviouly prefer a better o-ring, but whatever it takes I guess. I think I'm hooked up on the pump and tank specs, but let me know when you find one so I can bounce an idea off you.

I have a tank from a 2004 Silverado too that I am not too attached too it has the sending unit and all still as well. (is basically like new, was from a truck I parted out when it was near new) it is plastic as well..could chop it up in the name of science though...might have the same diameter sending unit assembly as the F body?

Go here... http://www.oringswest.com/ And read about O rings, they can provide the diameter & cross section you need in various materials & have a compatablity chart that will tell you whats the best choice...

No. Never spent the money for that unit. Nice idea, but a vaccuum referenced regulator already reduces pressure some when your not on the throttle. Also, I didn't want to retune the fuel map either.

Have you had any vapor lock problems? They recommend for a street driven car that you use the controller but I don't want to drop another $300 for a freakin controller.

I have had what could be considered a vapor lock.....When I used the existing fuel cell, the foam was cloging the filter, and the pump managed to pull it thru, and the AN08 vent was not nerly enough, and I imploded it! Does that count? But no, you don't need the controller, its a nice want to have.

Oz,
The plastic tanks are nice pieces, but only if you can use them as-is. They don't part out well because the plastic is REALLY thick, like over 1/4" in 2 layers of stuff. White on the inside, black on the outside. The lock ring setup for the pump is molded in to the plastic, and the plastic itself forms part of the sealing surface so you can't really cut/past parts. That's where the quest for the right o-ring begins...

I hear you...just thought I would mention it, since kinda tired of looking at the tank sitting along side the garage



One nice thing about the '69 Camaro I did, it has the late model floor pan, so the 2000 model fuel tank bolts right in and all the factory lines click onto it.
And going with an inline fuel pump on the Torana should be pretty well straight foward I am thinking.

Hehehe... I got ya... but I remember hacking up that Z's tank and it was a BEAR. Took quite a while with the jigsaw to generate chunks that would fit in the trash. That truck tank might make a good start for someone converting their trunk to EFI though. Trade bait?

Yep...too good to just toss away (it is like new..) so figure eventually will be able to swap it away for something usefull
(or a spare if the tank in my '02 1500HD ever fell out )
