I recently put a fresh 360 into my Dart and it only has about 100 miles on it. It was making noise and running low oil pressure so I decided to pull the motor and inspect. Come to find out the cam/lifters are in very sorry shape. Some are chipped off on the corners and some are concaved so bad AND some of the plungers in the lifters are all the way down in their bore ( no spring pressure on them). I can shake those lifters and hear rattling around inside of them. Crower cam with compcams lifters. I followed the correct break in procedure and lifter preload was correct. I will include some pictures. PLEASE let me know what you guys think of what happened. Bad set of lifters??

Wow! I see this way to often. I have to think that the new stuff is junk. What oil did you use for breakin? Were the lifters tight in the bore?

First thing I thought of when I saw the lobe dug into the lifter it wasn't spinning.... Also were they stock rocker arms or adj. ones?

All the lifters slide into their bore i did not feel any resistance. They felt good. I have magnum heads so I have the stock rockers. I used 15w-40 rotella with zinc additive.

Hi Ori. clean the lifter outsides and the bores w brake Kleen, blow em dry and lube the bores/outsides lightly w WD40, install them & raise the lifters off of the lobe w your finger then release and see if the lifter falls down onto it's lobe w a resounding "thunk". If not they weren't spinning. Did you take out the inner spring for breakin? (if applicable) What spring pressures.

I went through this crap with my 360. Check your installed heights/pressures for your valve springs. Some machine shops go shim-happy when there is no need for it. Good luck!

1968 Charger project. I don't have a fender tag or a buildsheet, so it's getting a 440. Help me decide on a color--most everything looks great! (NOT white. My Challenger is white. Need some variety :D)

uh, new oil with out zinc.... or you have double springs and didn't take the inner out for break in.

I used the stock wimpy Magnum valve springs for my break in, then switched in the HP springs after 500 miles or so. If you do this, just be sure to check for coil bind with your cam, and don't rev it too crazy with the stock springs.

I used moly paste on the lifter lobes and the bottom face of the lifters. I put pure motor oil on the sides of the lifters and made sure they spun freely. Put the red Permatex Ultra slick on the rockers.
