Well looks like we pressed our luck a little to far on our S/C dragster. Last night at Gateway she went k-boom. Driver said it made a big pop and then sounded like hxxl so he clicked it off and we towed it back. Pulled the valve covers and everything up top looked fine. He said it sounded deep. Can't complain, it's a stock block 500 with almost 600 passes without ever pulling the pan. That stock block probably gave up. Time to build a 572 we've been wanting but putting off. I'll probably be asking some dumb questions to you guy's about any help your willing to give. I'll be using the same B1 Original heads we have. What kind of times can I expect with a 572 in this same chassis. The 500 ran high 7.80's. Thanks for listening to my sob story.

Sorry to hear about the engine, maybe it isn't too bad? But if the caps/block are broke...
A 572 would be a big difference. But the faster you go, the more hp it takes to improve one more tenth of a second. If you are buying an aftermarket block, and the dragster has the chassis to use it, a 572 makes sense. It will likely need a gear change, higher mph and the engine will want less rpm (same heads).

That is a lot of passes without looking at the bearings, IMO. I have 500 passes on my 511. But I disassembled and checked everything a couple times. I did change the main bearings at 284. They weren't too bad, but while it was apart I changed them. The rod bearings were like new, except for 1 set had a scratch (debris?) so that one rod had new bearing shells at 284. IMO, after the first season of a new motor and then every 300-500 passes, it is worth looking at things.

HEMIFRED, you don't think B1 orig. will handle a 572?

440JIM, yeh we new we were living on borrowed time. The chassis is certified to 6.50. We had coated bearings maybe that helped. What kind of block would you guy's use, iron or aluminum?

Sorry to hear about your loss..But I dont think at 600 passes that it owed you anything. As for the block I vote aluminum, as or the 572 if you ahev good heads why not go that way. Pleny of 572's with -1 heads out there and the B1 ius a superior piece for sure.

The heads you have are fine on a 572. And with the frequency of your maintenance and bearing inspections I'd go aluminum as it's repairable

Al,
Your making me nervous, I am at 500 passes right now. Stock block, aluminum caps, Callies crank, SCAT steel H-beam rods. But I don't make the power of the B1 heads and I do keep an eye on the bearings. It has been 228 passes since it was apart the last time. I plan to freshen it this winter, so that will be over 300 since last time, and 600 total.

I am running B1 originals with a 572 in a old mega block. The best I have ran is a 7.41 in a 1900 lbs car. I works well. May be interested in selling.
