Can somebody give me a crash course on disassembling a 727 down to the bare case? I've never done it before and am kind of stumped. Thanks guys

If you've never done it before, get a good service manual.

The first step is to take the front pump housing out of the case. It's a little tricky in that you need to thread bolts into two holes and use some type of slide hammer or chain to break most of them free. From there I usually pull the pan off and the valvebody out, then loosen the front band and pull the clutches, planetaries etc. out.

Be very careful so you can see where each bearing and bushing goes. You really do need a manual to do it right.

A book is a great idea.

You'll need snap ring pliers if you don't have a set. I pulled my pump loose by running a chain through a dumbell weight and giving it a few light tugs.

I forgot to mention that I'm not interested in saving any parts, etc. I've basically loosened/taken out every bolt I can. So your saying I need to pry the front pump out?

1st put a dial indicator on the input shaft and measure your end play and write this dimention on th inside bell face w a magic marker as you'll need to refer to it later. I'd clean the exterior case absolutely squeaky clean right off the bat before you start teardown. (trust me on that one)

It's a little tough to pry the pump out without destroying something. If you don't have a slide hammer, here's another way using common bolts. First take two 5/16" NC bolts and cut about 1/2" to 3/4" of the threaded portion off. Next cut a screwdriver type slot in the end of the threaded part you just cut off. Basically you are making a short stud with a flat screwdriver slot on one end. Using a small screwdriver, screw these two studs down into the two pump holes that have the 3/8" threads in the pump body. You want these studs screwed down into the 5/16" aluminum case holes. Once they are bottomed, take two 3/8" NC bolts and screw them into the same holes but they will engage the 3/8" NC holes in the pump housing and will butt up against the studs you screwed in first. Tighten the two 3/8" bolts evenly and they will push the pump out for you. Once the pump is out, use your screwdriver to remove the 5/16" studs.

Here's the rock bottom easiest way to pull the front pump!

Run a 3/8" bolt into the larger bolt hole. Stuff a big wrench under the head of the bolt. Notice the pointy bits of the open end wrench hit the case? Give 'er a tug and out it comes.
You might have to do it on both sides but it sure is quick and easy.

I used your method Feets and it worked well, thank you. Now how do I go about getting the rest of it out? The tailshaft section I mean.

Take all the bolts out of the tailshaft housing that attaches it to the main case.

Then take out the two phillips head screws on the bottom of the tailshaft housing and remove the metal plate that they hold in. That will give you access to a large snap ring that goes around the big bearing on the rear tailshaft. While spreading that snap ring apart, you should be able to pull the tailshaft housing off the tailshaft.

It's a little late now for this dis-assembly, but I just remove the valve body and tap the front pump housing out from the back with a punch and hammer.

Im not using any of the stock pieces for the new build, I just need the case. The internals were in very very bad shape to begin with, I bought it as a core. I feel pretty stupid right now, but I've never really messed with transmissions. Thanks for the help.

Get a piece of chain 2ft long. Take a couple of 3/8" bolts threaded through the chain and screwed into the pump. Yank the chain, out it comes. Or really crude. Remove pump bolts. Lift trans and tap bell housing face on the ground, all the front parts will fall out.

By the time you attach the chain, you'd already have it out with the big wrench method.
