So I'm going to be painting my bezel, as funds won't allow for a repo one.

I was wondering how I could get that vinyl look to it, perhaps wrinkle paint?

I was also considering using some *gasp* Pontiac Trans am engine turned decals to run in the lower silver section, as I'll be using "chrome" spray paint to get the as close to, but not really close to chrome look on the trim.

Perhaps it will give it that 70's hill billy nostalgia look.... maybe some fur on the top of the dash I keeed I keeed!

The insert that get painted black has a molded in grain to it.

Try painting the chrome with that chrome paint but paint the silver sections in a silver paint to show contrast.

This ones has been restored in chrome. But for reference....

I'll get some pics of my test contrast shots.

Unless I can find some real dull, or flat silver, there isn't enough contrast.

The engine turned decal maybe too bright anyway.

for the black part, its a insert? whats left on my dash is pealing away like paint!

Where would I get the insert?

Not a insert for the black part. It must be some old paint flaking. There was a wood grain insert option on 67-69's. I think the 69 is decal, where as the 67/68 is printed on aluminum cut sheet.

nope, no wood for me

I am going to mess with wrinkle paint and see if I can get good results.

I have found Sem Paints "Landau Black" to be excellent for doing the black. It gives the correct sheen for the black section. It comes in spray cans and is availible locally here in Ca. I'm not sure about the rest of the country.
Just did a quick search, it's availible online. Quite pricey though.

I've had good results with the SEM paint also. SEM has a 3 step process - cleaner, primer and paint. The cleaner gets grease ect. off and the primer softens the surface of the plastic a little so the paint grabs hold. Eastwood sells the kit if its not available locally.

PS. Rustoleum "chrome" spray paint works well to replace the aluminum or chrome look for the trim. Do the black first then mask and apply several thin coats of chrome. I did some AC vents that way and they turned out well.

I just did a 69 cluster for a friend on a budget. The texture was already cast into the cluster.

I lightly glass beaded the plastic to strip it, used Dutch Boy satin and them a mist coat of dutch boy flat (both spray bombs) for the black - this was done wet on wet and you have to go real light or you will fill in the texture.

For the chrome sections I painted it all with testors black enamel and then used a lacquer based chrome model paint (both of these were done with a airbrush).

It was inexpensive but pretty time consuming to do - took 2 tries to get all the colors and the masking right.

The paint on mine seems to be fuzzy? Like short suede?

No comments on the engine turned decal? I'm still not sold on it, but it would be different, as long as the decal isn't too thick.
