With all the problems with the oil and wiping out cams because the manufacturers removed the zinc from the oil for today's cars,I know many years ago I read an article about Marvel Mystry Oil..And the people from Marvel were asked what is the mystry additive.and they wouldnt say..So an independant lab did an analisis of it and I know I read that the mystry stuff was zinc..I'm 90% sure of it..but it was a real long time ago..Can anybody verify that ???I would be a great and inexpensive additive for the cam- zinc problem

I thought it was mineral spirits with some other stuff thrown in. Pretty good for blowing out carbon or freeing stuck pistons in a rusty old core motor.

I don't know about Marvel Mystery Oil but I understand most motorcycle oils have zink in it.

The "Mystery" to me has always been what to do with it.

They call it a "top end" lubricant. Top end of what ???

How is it used ? It has no viscosity rating so you can't just fill an oil pan with 5 quarts!

We always used it in the burrette to cc heads and cylinders 'cause its thin and the color made it easy to read.

Used as an oil additive in conservative amounts, it can quiet sticky, gummed up lifters and similar old-gunky-engineness.

Color me dubious when it comes to zinc content.

Personally, I use it as air tool oil.

Down to just a blue car now.

Silenced the lifters in my 318

The stuff rocks, my dad used it all the time.

Before there was all these bogus tigerwizz products, there was Mystery Oil. The 'gandaddy' to all that stuff. See the part about 'mineral spirits'? You should figure it out from there. The first cheap trick you did when the engine ran rough, was pour a qt. of Mystery Oil down the carburetor while the engine is running at a high RPM. They knew they were cleaning out something. Just what they cleaned out didn't matter. It fixed it. Combining mineral spirits with oil was "voo-doo" science back then.

Yup. We had a lot of voo-doo science back then...

We have used Marvel oil many times on farm tractors that have the engines stuck from sitting,it's still a useful product to have on the shelf!

I use it in my air tools. I love the wintergreen aroma

Local AutoZone doesn't carry it, so I used "Seafoam", same kinda stuff, great results in freeing up stuck lifters.

This is copied from another thread.

We analyzed and tested both of these additives at Exxon.

Marvel Mystery oil is 30% varsol (charcoal lighter fluid) and 70% 30wt base oil some red dye and wintergreen fragrance. It is from the late 1920s.

Avblend is very light weight paraffinic base oil (sewing machine oil)with 1% ether and blue dye. It is from the late 1950s. If it is absorbed by the metal, why doesn't it leak out of the can?

These are solvent type products. Some people find them beneficial for sticky valves or some sludge dispersal. If you are depending on them for either of these reasons, you have bigger problems.

Both evaporate within hours in an engine. Neither one provides any corrosion protection or anti-wear benefit. Neither one will harm anything in the recommended concentration.

Q: What is the difference between Varsol® and regular Paint Thinner?

A: Regular Paint Thinner is a "generic" brand of thinner while Varsol® carries a guarantee of purity. As a result, Paint Thinner is usually less expensive than Varsol® but can be used for many of the same applications.

So, it's safe to say that Mystery oil is one part thinner to 2.3 parts oil.

70% Light Aromatic Oil (Pale Oil)
- It is a Naphthenic Oil, so while it oxidizes faster than a Paraffinic oil, it does clean and dissolve sludge and carbon well and cleans up after itself from any oxidation. serves as base oil as well. [Naphthenic oils have more solvency and are more polar (they are attracted to metal more), but oxidize faster.

29% Mineral Spirits
- Cleans Varnish very well. General cleaner. Also acts as an antioxidant.

38 parts per million (ppm) Boron
- AW/EP agent, friction reducer, antioxidant

900 ppm Phosporous
- AW/EP agent

1/2% 1, 2 ortho-Dichlorobenzene
- EP agent as it interacts with Iron to form an Iron chloride barrier under any ZDDP or other AW additives. Also very good cleaner/solvent, and friction reducer

1/4% 1, 4 para-Dichlorobenzene
- EP agent as it interacts with Iron to form an Iron chloride barrier under any ZDDP or other AW additives. Also very good cleaner/solvent, and friction reducer

Oil of wintergreen - for the scent
- Not just for the cent, is also a cleaner. may aid lubricity.

Red Dye - for the color
- well this one just colors the stuff

we use it to shine up the interior of Wilbert burial vaults prior to the funeral service.

What is a "Wilbert" burial vault?
