Ok, so I'm totally confused now. In referencing this page , I have no idea what tranny I have now. It is a cast iron unit, 23 spline, but it has a 4.8" IBR in it. It has an A-body tail shaft. Also, I had to flip the lever for 1st/2nd gear for it to shift correctly. Based on the referenced page, the 74+ OD units had to have a flipped lever. The numbers stamped on the pad are un-readable because the VIN was stamped right over the top of it. I've tried several things to bring the numbers out, but no go. Any idea WTH I'm dealing with here?

That shifter doesn't look like anything I've ever seen come out of a stock Mopar. I'm guessing that you have an A or F body overdrive 4 speed, and it's the shifter on it that requires the levers to be installed that way. The 'normal' Mopar shifter has all 3 levers coming from the same spot on the shifter - that one almost looks like a 3 speed shifter, with just 2 levers coming from it, with a 3rd lever added on for reverse. Possibly it's a stock shifter from another manufacturer, or an aftermarket shifter. The regular 4 speeds and the overdrive 4 speeds use the same shifters, the only difference is that you flip the 3/4 lever upside down on the overdrive units. That one has all the levers flipped upside down compared to how they should be for an overdrive 4 speed. I think if you put a 'normal' Mopar shifter on that, the levers will work in their correct positions, although you will need to get a shorter rod for the reverse lever.

Looks like a run-of-the-mill A body unit to me, the 4.80" retainer and the number pad make it '68 or later.
