This may be a dumb question but I have a couple of pairs of C body HP manifolds here I was gonna have sandblasted. 3 of them are pretty crusty but the mounting flange is still shiney and smooth. I assume the blasting won't harm or pit the flange area will it? Just somthing I was wondering about.

Is that what most people do, bead blast them? There's only one place in town that will bead blast stuff and I forget the exact price but it's expensive. I could get them sandblasted for probably $20.

I had my HP manifolds sandblasted a couple of months ago. They turned out fine. No damage to them. $20 is a steal. I paid $80 for both.

A few years ago I bought a small bead blasting cabinet on line for $135. After I got it I found some bigger ones for less money. If you have a lot of stuff to blast I would recomend just buying a cheap cabinet. You can get the blasting media through a company like Eastwood. You'll save a lot of money in the long run doing it yourself.

And cast iron is real f***ing hard!

Sandblast them. Anything else on rusty cast iron is like pissing on a forest fire. Taping the flanges with a couple layers of duct tape will save the machined surfaces. Don't skimp on tape, 5 layers will do more good than harm. Trim the excess around the flanges so the blasting doesn't have a big edge to catch and blow the tape off. Cut the openings out and tell the guy to shove the blasting nozzle down the ports to get rust and carbon buildup out of there too!

You want to use aluminum oxide on rusty cast iron manifolds. Bead blasting leave steh surface smoother, but it will take forever when used at the correct pressure.

And why not, time is money and as the saying goes, "there's a sucker born every minute". If I were some scumbag charging by the hour I'd bead blast them too!

Sandblast 'em and GIT 'ER DONE !!!

Anyone with half a brain and a properly functioning bead blast cabinet, should be able to get them clean in 15 minutes. If it takes any longer then that or they charge more than $40.00 for the pair, your getting hosed. I've done hundreds of manifolds, blocks, and heads, it ain't rocket science.

Sandblast them and leave the bead blasting for the people with half a brain.
