Hello,
I am curious as to the difference (and reason) for a vented gas tank? I believe I have the "non-vented" type (will attach photo).

Is there any advantage of one over the other? What does a vented-tank look like in the trunk area?

Thanks!!

Hmm..after seeing your pic, I would think twice about firing up a stogie in your car.

The vented tanks basically have a vent line from gas tank to charcoal canister in the engine bay. Then a line goes to the carburetor..free gas vapors for your carb, at no extra cost to you !

The "California Emissions" cars had the fuel/vapor separation device you showed in the trunk. Also, the unique and available gas tank has a partioned "vapor recovery" section that costs about a gallon in capacity. At least in a '70 the "vent" line ran into the crankcase so any fumes could be burned (sometimes?) through the PCV. One choice is to run the "vent" line into the right rear frame rail like a standard vent.

What year is the car?

The N95 cars did not have a charcoal canister in 1970.

The vent line ran to the valve cover breather routing the gas fumes to the aircleaner so they could be burned via normal engine combustion.

Hi,

This is a 1970 Challenger - 440-4bbl Car. It was built in Los Angeles (per Fender tag) and has always been in California (as far as I know).

So, does this sound/look like a "Vented" car? I'm curious because I'm in the market for a new Gas Cap -- and the selections seem to be between Vented and Non. (also, it has the Flip-Top on the outside).

Thanks a lot!

What is that extra tube running up from the trunk floor?

My understanding... the vapor recovery line functions as a vent so the cap doesn't need to be vented. A vented cap would defeat the purpose of recovering the fumes anyhow.

Still...I will not smoke a stogie in that california required system.

Vent the vapors to the trunk it looks like.

Whoever made those laws probably got fired (no pun intended).

It is a totally closed system. Fuel tank capacity is the same for federal and california cars.

Amazing how an unchallenged lie can become the absolute truth.
