In the process of rebuilting my 904. Was thinking of going with a blanket or shield but really dont want to hassle with them so thinking of another route. I plan to take a 1/8 thick plate round it to fit the main body of the trans and weld it solid to it. My question is how much if any protection with this add? Thanks in advance.

if you're talking 1/8 steel (i assume) probably more protection than either the blanket or shield if done properly but that doesn't mean it will pass tech because the powers that be want their money

I've always wondered about some type of kevlar or "flack jacket" type of material that could be glued or attached to the floor board. It would be out ot the way for tranny service/work & should not affect the heat build up many racers have reported.

no 1/8 aluminum welded to the trans case. Wanted something Ill never have to mess with or fight with. Im not fast enough to require a blanket/shield just doing it for personal safety and I just have issues with leaving well enough alone.

Put a blanket on it! When my trans blew, parts went through the floor , there was no case to the tailshaft. I'm a firm beleiver now dennis

That's what I have in my new ride a scatter blanket from a Nascar team, has heat proof material that goes against the floor and is made out of kevlar-plus a Blanket around the trans. It had snaps that holds it to the floor.

Switched to the dark side...

Keep in mind he's asking about a 904 guys.

I have NEVER heard of a 904 blowing up.

The drum is just too small, it just doesn't have enough rotational inertia to blow itself apart like a 727.
