I REALLY like the texture and finish of Totally Auto's satin black, but at $25 a can, I can't afford it. And Rustoleum and Krylon's satin have too much shine for my liking. Does anyone have a better suggestion other than bite the bullet and go Totally

Gets chalky if left in the sun, though...

I used the rustoleum satin black on my hood

wet sand it and spray a dull coat clear on it

did a flat black hood the same way

turned out great to me

If you do go with an activated automotive paint though, either buy it in small batches or have them divide it up into small cans for you- Every time you open it the paint gets glossier, the flattening agents evaporate out of it. I bought a quart of PPG Concept a couple of times in satin/flat black to paint small parts with, and by the time I'd get down in the can a ways it would be almost gloss black

If you are just doing smaller areas, the Eastwood underhood black is a nice satin color in a spray can...I got a few cans around now, and going to be spraying the front of the core support on my Torana shortly with it. (and used it on some assorted brackets and what not..)

You can get the SEM trim black in spray bomb or quarts.

Any auto paint supply store. SEM is a pretty big company.

Would the SEM trim black be good for the steering column and dash frame as well? Not looking to be exact just close.

The sem trim black is a real nice satin black. Looks like the OEM satin black trim on new cars. These stripoes were done with SEM trim black.

Does it get affected really quickly by the sun? Do you top coat it with anything or just spray it and leave it?

spray bomb, I like duplicolor's trim black, and krylon's "rust tough" satin.

I dont use any top coat on mine, but when it gets wet I wipe dry right after so not to get water spots on it. I've used it on my dash frame and it looked very correct.

No need to top coat. Great hold out in sunlite.
