how are you pulling out timing in high gear if needed?

let me guess you have lets say a 6* retard chip hooked up to one of the circuits on a "grounded" toggle switch or "NC" (which keeps it inactive). when in high gear you flip the toggle adding power to the circuit pulling out the 6*

Lots of street miles locked out at 12.11 compression and it starts better w/OUT the retard than with it. I have a seperate toggle that starts the car which I use sometimes by cranking the motor over w/the key then hitting the toggle to lite it.Sometimes I start it that way, sometimes not but starts fine eighter way.

I do the same w/ timing locked out at 38

Some have issues with misfire when using the start retard ,this is due to pulling too much retard with incorrectly pased distributor caps........earlier closing intake valves can cause havoc regards starter kickback.

Busted many ring gears in the past.

thx.... would plugging a rpm activated box with the dial take care of this and elimnate the toggle?

Not sure why you would want a locked out distributor on a street car? Mechanical advance helps it start, helps it accelerate w/o detonation and helps economy. Vacuum advance helps economy even more and keeps plugs and chambers clean while cruising. Yes, there is some work to set it up but big benefit.

i was gonna put a no2 type switch in the shifter linkage so it activated retard when the trans lever was put in high gear..
the toggle thing could bite you ...not being consistant.and forgetting it on..and you run with retard when your not wanting too...(thats retarded)
if you can get the advance to work on the street
id use it.
especially with a manual trans...it will detinate when you lugg it..
fwiw..
cheaspt.

Yes .......... if you want to retard the timing in every gear.
Which sort of defeats the whole " High gear retard " concept.
Micro switch on the shifter or lever on the trans to close the circuit and apply 12 volts to retard box with a dial or pill would be my suggestion.
I have always used the shifter for this.
