let me guess you have lets say a 6* retard chip hooked up to one of the circuits on a "grounded" toggle switch or "NC" (which keeps it inactive). when in high gear you flip the toggle adding power to the circuit pulling out the 6*

Lots of street miles locked out at 12.11 compression and it starts better w/OUT the retard than with it. I have a seperate toggle that starts the car which I use sometimes by cranking the motor over w/the key then hitting the toggle to lite it.Sometimes I start it that way, sometimes not but starts fine eighter way.

I do the same w/ timing locked out at 38

Some have issues with misfire when using the start retard ,this is due to pulling too much retard with incorrectly pased distributor caps........earlier closing intake valves can cause havoc regards starter kickback.

Busted many ring gears in the past.
