Do you guys let your winch sit out in the weather? Will it hurt the winch like the rain and things or do I need to get a box for it?
Thanks

One thing I like to have on a winch is free wheel
so you can pull the cable out instead of the slow
winching it out(waste of time)... on mine I loosen
the clutch and pull it out.... hard to do on a direct
gear drive unless it has a idler gear which can move
to give it a free wheel position ..... JMO

It shouldn't be left out. The cable will rust and fowl up the whole deal.

I think i bought mine at sams club and it was around that price.

but anyways, we took a junk hitch and cut it up, and mounted it on the trailer.

my winch has a hitch mount on it. works great.

if that has one, let me know and ill take pics.

I got a flier to the house a couple of days ago that
had a 20% off coupon and had a 49.99 winch rated at
3000#... looked pretty nice and I think I might go
back and pick it up

Fred:

I have the $59 winch which has the handle. I welded up a bracket on the front of my open trailer. The power plug and the remote plug are all removable for storage. I have the power plug modified to plug in to the trailer power plug. This winch has been on the front of this trailer for at least 3 years. Been in all kinds of weather.

The handle will come in handy if you should loose power for some reason. The clutch can be released to free wheel the wire spool. I have only had the motor overheat twice that I can remember and that was pulling a mini van and a pick-up truck on to the trailer. Let it cool down and it will go right back to work.

I bought one last summer and use my jump box instead of a battery. Works great

I went through the winch gauntlet.
First I bought an identical one(with the crank) off E-bay rated a 5000lb.
It lasted 3 times pulling a rolling E body on my trailer then the cable got all twisted up going onto the spool and locked up the motor, never to work again.
The second was the camo one with the wireless remote from Harbor Freight, it died(motor locked up) on the very first pull with the same drivetrain-less E-body. I took it back to HF

I then bought this one off E-bay.
3000lb. Viper with synthetic rope.
I bought the identical winch for my ATV a few years ago and it has worked flawlessly and I have abused it pretty good.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VIPER-Max...sQ5fAccessories

This one has worked perfectly for a couple years.
I bought an ATV plate mount that the winch bolts to and it has a 2" receiver insert on the other end.
I welded a 2" receiver tube to a plate and bolted the plate to front of my trailer floor with bolts going through the floor and under the trailer frame to another plate.
The mounted winch slides in and out of the receiver tube.
So far so good.
