In 40+ years in the business I have replaced many more gears for ratio changes or from not being clocked correctly than from being worn out.

Yep, I guess it did, But they don't use that anymore. Always room for improvement.

I think points are obsolete now too aren't they?

They are still using that design on the new transmissions and it still works great.
