Snowing in the north!
Went to change gears in my 833 for the speedo and see that I don't have a pin for aligning the gear
in the back. Is this required or will it function with out it? Seems like over time the plastic would
get hot and melt anyway? If not, would a dowel pin
work or was it a roll pin?????

I can't think of anything that a person would describe as a pin in these things.

There is a hole in the trans housing that is in alignment with the speedo gear, or at least that is what it looks like.....

There is a 5/16 bolt hole for the wishbone shaped hold down for the gear..... But I don't think that what you mean...

ANOTHER case where a Factory Service Manual would come in handy! (Or a fellow moparts user who is willing to learn some new software to bring you a picture,)

Whoops, that pic and text is from the TorqueFlite section, but a quick look at the 833 section shows a different picture, but about the same text. I got a bum left leg out of the Navy, and when I think transmission, it always comes out TorqueFlite. Like I said at the top of my last post.....Factory Service Manual.

There is a hole inside the transmission that looks like it aligns with the plastic part of the gear which also has a hole in it. I was thinking it was a support pin which might hold the rear of the gear opposite the front which the speedo cable goes into.
You cannot see the hole unless the gear is removed.

Listen......There is no pin. the pics posted show everything. The gear is held in place by the adaptor. The gear can only go so deep into the tailshaft housing as its machined.

Post pictures of what you are looking at....

No pin. Just insert the pinion gear into the adapter housing, insert housing into trans tailshaft, rotate housing until the tooth range of your gear is down at the 6 o'clock position. Install retaining clip and bolt, then tighten bolt.

Ok, so what does the end opposite the speedo housing go to. So you are saying it floats loose?
Then it is only supported by the housing its self.
So then is there a thrust button in the trans that
keeps the gear from floating front to back?

I'm not trying to.

Look guys, I'm a mechanical engineer that worked in automotive for 15 years.

Ok get your slams out of the way....

Now that said,
if there is not a thrust button to control the end play on the gear, and no support on both ends of a driven gear, it's a pretty crappy design. Period.

No wonder they make one sacrificial...........

It just amazing that they last 20-30 years considering how badly you say the are designed.

It rests against machined area of trans, that you should see when the gear and housing are removed.
