The car did have the N94 air cleaner on it in 1983 or 84 when I traded the second owner of that car an NOS stock air cleaner for his N94 Hemi air cleaner. I needed it to put on top of the 65 race Hemi that I was running in my black A12 Runner. I found the air cleaner completely by coincidence at an NHOA meet in York, PA within one month after getting the Hemi running in my A12. The A12 hood opening let you see the whole top of the motor and it was fate that I found that air cleaner for my car. I showed it with the Hemi in it for about 6 years from The Nats to Englishtown, year in year out. The air cleaner made the Hemi look like right at home in the Road Runner with that A12 hood! When I found the air cleaner, Walt Downer showed up just as we were sealing the deal and tried to talk the guy out of going thru with it. The guy (from the Upstate NY area)was very straight and said a deal was a deal. He would not have traded me unless I could get an expert to interpret his fender tag to prove it was not an N94 cold air hood car. He was very happy to get the correct air cleaner for his car. Walt Downer ended up with the car before Anatole got it. Walt Downer had added a few non original things on the car including the wheel lip moldings. At one point, Downer tried to get the air cleaner back from me after I got the 440-6 back in my car. I was willing to trade him for a pair of Hemi exhaust manifolds. We made a deal over the phone. He showed up with the manifolds but he backed out because a friend of his convinced him the manifolds were worth more than the N94 air cleaner. Needless to say, I did not have any good experiences in trying to deal with Downer...I ended up selling it to a friend of Bill Drake's for $750 in the early 90's. It went on a pink E-body racing in upstate NY. Here's what it looked like in my black A12. You can see the depression in the back of the seal where the steel hood from the blue Challenger was biting into it. It might have been put on it at the factory by accident? No one knows for sure why it was on that Challenger?

Years ago I ran a 440 Six Pack in my 1969 Hemi RR... air cleaner matched the Air Grabber hood fine. I believe the basic interfaces were always maintained if possible...

I think the 69 440-6 carb studs were too long and would dent the 69 Rrunner steel hood. I don't think the A12 carb set and air cleaner setup would clear? If you had a 70 carb setup, the studs may have cleared?

The FE5 N94 Hemi Challenger was bought from Lee H. out of Lubbock, Texas by NHOA member Glenn H. who sold it to NHOA member Mark A. In the late 1980s Mark sold the car to someone from Florida (IIRC), and later Moparts member Patrick F. ended up with the car. I do not know anything that relates to a grudge match with a Buick...




Yes, Patrick was/is a member of this board and owns a Stage I Buick. He and/or others were trying to get a grudge match set up.

Thank you Dan for answering my Grudge Match Question. The match thing kind of went very quiet a long while back and I was just wondering if it made it the the drag strip or not. If that is the car in previous pictures, I do not think that car will run in any grudge match for a long while. Looks like it has the show car touch.

Just looking through a letter I had recieved from Anatol V. some time ago and he had another real cool Challenger. 1971 440-6 Challenger.

FC7,118 BUILD DATE E87, D32, H6X9,V1X, V6X, A36, B51, C16, C55, G11, J25, J54, M21, M26, N41, N42, N85, R35, 26, This information I got off the build sheet,it is a little hard to see but I think I got most things.

He told me this was his daily driver to and from work and around town for atleast 2 years in the eighties. I guess your driver mopar is a 1971 440-6 Challenger when you have a stable full of Hemi E and B bodies back at home in the garage waiting to be put to the test.

The owner of the HEMI car drives his cars, I wonder if a "grudge match" could be set up for MATS next year. Since it now resides on the west coast.

I have one of these air cleaners for my car, unfortunately I believe it is the 340 unit. Anybody know of any way to ID the parts or part numbers?

The HEMI N94 air cleaner may be EXPENSIVE, but if you want to talk RARE - find a single 4bbl N94 air cleaner ....... or even a picture "I dare you"!!

340 should have a shorter carb flange I would think?

No clue what it should be compared to the 383 though, is that the boat you are in?

Didn't your brother or Galen find that air cleaner at Spring Fling in the swap section? What was the whole story behind that purchase? I think the story I heard was not completely accurate and you corrected it once for me.

Yes, my brother found a N94 single 4bbl air cleaner at '93ish Spring Fling. He was about to fly off to Botswana with the peace corp, and was low on $$$$. Galen paid for and I got the air cleaner. Friends in high places!

Anyway, I have yet to see another N94 single 4bbl air cleaner. The two part numbers has me puzzled. The air cleaner I have "resembles" a '70-'71 style snorkel-less 340 unit with block off plates over the openings (like a "TRANS AM" 6bbl air cleaner), but has a wide lip around the top & a "SHAKER" seal. Since two part numbers exist I'm thinking this is the 340 unit & the 383 unit would be similar & the starting point would be a typical dual snorkel big-block 4bbl air cleaner.

I cant say for sure if this ever made it into production which I doubt, but I believe initially this was the intended design for the 4bbl N94.
There was one of these, and only one, in the 'hobby shop' at Fram where they did testing.
Basically a 4 bbl shaker base with the TA outer ring, same way they built a 6pak and Hemi TA base.
Since so few of these 4bbl cars were built, Hamtramk likely never got their hands on it to try it on a 4bbl TA hood equipped Challenger to see if the alignment with hood closure would seal and work. The two 4bbl numbers 3577457, 3577458 fall in line with the 6 pak and Hemi numbered TA bases but we all know how part numbers in the books can be misleading.
In all probability the aircleaner Dan has is likely what Chrysler decided to go with.
I recall Ken Papa had one like Dan years ago at his dealership also unless it is the same one.

I tried a wide variety of factory 4BBL & 6BBL intakes and carbs on the Road Runner. The setup that I ran most often was an aluminum 6BBL intake with a trio of "Ford" 250 CFM Holleys, but I ran factory Mopar Holleys as well. I always checked clearances, so any carb stud issue would have been found before closing the hood...

I saw a 4 barrel T/A - AAR air cleaner,that looked just like that one at Carlsile,about two years ago. The seller was calling it the prototype air cleaner for what was to be the production air cleaner for the 4 barrel equipped 71 Challenger T/A. If thats the one you are discussing here. The same vendor had a complete 1969 383 Cuda engine,as you probably know the drivers side motor mount is completely different on those blocks for big block a body cars.

Like I said in an earlier post I sold Galen Govier my T/A single four barrel air cleaner at the Spring Fling back in the mid 1990's. It was on my 1970 Challenger that I bought new at Del Amo Dodge in Torrance, California. In 1971 I took the 340 motor out of the car and put in a 426 Hemi. I drag raced the car at Lions, OCIR and Irwindale. I sold the car in 1977. The air cleaner was the last part from the car. I don't have any paper work since back then no one cared about fender tags or N94. The car was green with green interior.

Isn't Ben Snobar selling 4-bbl T/A air cleaners? I wouldn't be surprised if someone out there would try to pass one off as an original.

Ben sells them as two piece..very easy to tell. His outer ring has 7 stamped holes to fit over the seven studs that he leaves in the 4 bbl base...and includes the 7 oblong washers and nuts usd with shakers.
Plus his 4 bbl base has no drain tubes as an original would have.
If the one at Carlisle was that way you could spot it a mile away.
One that was destined for production would have the same amount of spotwelds___ in the same location as an original TA base.
Even the repro TA bases haven't got that right....yet.
