I have a set of 1971 2.02 U Heads, that someone spent countless hours on porting them. The intake ports are so smooth that I am concerned about them being too smooth. I would describe the finish to be semi polished. It looks like they were ported with approx 320 grit rolls. They left no stone unturned and the entire port is done this way, with no signs of any of the original rough casting left. Are these heads OK to use for any type of application? If not, is there anyway to save them? Thanks.

Some say they should have some roughness to help
mix the A/F.... so if you hit them with a 120 grit
tootsie rolls it should be fine... basically just
rough them up some dont change the ports (unless
they need it)

60 grit at the most. I don't use a sand roll in my stuff at all.

Man how do you know what is an acceptable amount of the intake valve guide that can be removed? I am home/hobbyist working some J heads. I am too scared to remove real bulk from that guide so I just used a 60grit roll and removed casting bumps, slag and blemishes.

Hit 'em with 60 grit rolls.
If you don't have any you'll find they're the ones you'd use the most if you did have them and they come in handy.

You are getting overly concerned about nothing. You are going to be wasting your time and effort "roughing" the ports for no benefit whatsoever. Case of some "theory" getting blown way out of proportion. I can say sandblasting or running a sandpaper roll over the existing ports will be unlikely to give any noticable improvement. Put those heads together and consider yourself lucky you found a set of ported heads.

I would add........If they were finished with 320 grit, there's a good
chance they didn't know what they were doing to begin with.

The head I have pictured, was finished with 60 grit so, it may just appear
to be too fine of finish. Here is a 60 grit finish in a different light.

I hardly ever use a sand (tootsie) roll. I just touch up the carbide marks with a grinding stone--maybe. J.Rob
