Besides the overall poor quality manufacturing it takes 15-20 seconds to fully energize when warm. When it does it's so weak the slightest downward pressure causes it to collapse. After 3k miles, plunger shaft boot already has holes wearing through. Just no longer care if it doesn't look original, need it to work and not willing to pay $400-500 for NOS. Pretty sure I saw another post here awhile back about using the Holley generic solenoid and fabricating a bracket for it but couldn't locate it just now. Wanted to give credit where it was due. Here's my version of the Holley solenoid change over.

Yea, I hear it allot, pretty sad state of affairs, the reproductions look great on the outside but the manufacturer went cheap on the internal wire and made them weak. Door is wide open for someone to use what's currently available and come up with better internals.

The holley solenoid looks to me like it'd bolt in place of where your old one was. Looks basically like the stock one to me, with the wire in a different spot. Solenoid "only" costs 75 bucks.

Pictures are of the replacement modified Holley #46-74 solenoid. Should have mentioned I altered the spade connection to exit out the side rather than straight down and used the repo lower boot.

Just curious about the micro-switch on your throttle, is it for the solenoid?

The micro switch is set up to be part of my A/C compressor auto cut-out circuit. Acts as a simple throttle position switch, closed through 15-20 degrees off idle. Combined with a basic RPM activated switch control, set to about 3k rpms, and a relay the compressor never sees high revs and is automatically shut off when I open up the center carb and forget about having the A/C on.
Better angle

I've done basically the same thing with my 6 pak cars, retrofited with the currently avaliable line of Holley solenoids, that range anywhere from $40-$80,....the "repro" or "reconditioned" factory solenoids offered by various individuals are just plain junk

Thank you for the info. That is a pretty trick setup with the A/C cut out switch also. You might want to add a second throttle return spring. I noticed you only have one and that could be disastrous.

Does anyone have any experience with the Standard Brand ES6 idle solenoid? Do they exhibit the same weak action as the newer replacement?

I have used that ES6 before it it works fine and is very close to the original, other than the gold bracket.

Any of the older OEM style replacment solenoids (such as the Standard example shown above) normally work fine. I have swapped the inner workings of those into older original cases to make them functional again after a replating job when the original internals are corroded or damaged.
