Remember this heap? Actually, if you knew what you were looking at, the body was exceptional on this car. All original sheet metal except small patches seam welded in the rear lower quarters. Just like the blue 71 Cuda last year, we will be preparing this car for the mini restoration clinic on the morning of February 20th for the annual B/E & A winter party. With all the moving plans, painting floors & walls and installing a down draft easy bake oven, we will try to get as much of the assembly work done as possible. With the new facility, we will be able to do 100 percent of our restoration work in house short of motors done by Nick at Comp-U-flow and the 4-speed boxes by my very good friend Gus the meat smoking maniac. I dragged the car to the shop that Saturday night of the Mopar Nationals with the help of Dennis the previous owner. He was kind enough to follow us on his way back to his home in Indiana. The actual restoration work started around the October 1st area. While the body was away, the drive line and interior work was done. If you remember, it took 5 days to assemble about 80 percent of the blue 71 Cuda last year. With all the additional distractions, I’m afraid the T/A might take 2 weeks to get it to that level .

I get asked all the time what it takes to do a body? Depends what level your looking for, there's 542 hours in this one.

Since we used base/clear, instead of single stage, we will be back taping the entire car and appling the single stage over spray from paint that was left from tinting the sealer. We always tint the sealer so the color of the paint is correct and covers much better. Again, colors don't look right in the picture.

Hey, is that a Jim Ridge alternator and NOS fuel filter from Dave Walden? The radiator from Bob at Glen Ray will look perfect in front of that fan.

I've seen first hand a lot of the componets for this car. Judging by the amount of detail poured into the seperate parts, this is going to be one heck of a restoration.... I can't wait to see the finished product.

Hey Mike,
Car looks fantastic and is going to be really nice when you are done with it. I have to ask though. What is a "lick knob" stencil? I know about paint dobs and such.

Didn't have much time today with all the painting going on in the other building. Was able to get most of the bottom over spray done, we'll finish that tomorrow along with the wheel wells and cowl, core support and rocker black out.

I have some good pictures of how that pinch weld was painted if you need. I think Barry has the paperwork explaining it as well.

Very nice, you are making great progress, coming from someone who took 7 years to do his T/A but hey, mine was burned!!!
Such a great restoration, make sure you put the 340 6pack fender decals on slanting forward!!!
Good luck

....I wish I had a picture of the mark she made but here we are under the car. I had a splash of white paint on the parking brake cable adjusting nut and I was showing her where to paint...

I'll guarantee you Troy, that pretty little girl you have can duplicate those paint dabs way better than we can. Could you imagine inspecting the same stuff everyday? Especially after the old liquid lunch that was so socially tolerated back then. It might of resembled a matador fighting a bull, ha take that, wow there’s another one for you, woops missed one (I’ll get the next one twice). Could you imagine bending over after a tough night bowling with the guys to get the bottom of the rockers painted? Or the guy just got engaged and he has “happy feet” and doesn’t miss a thing?
We put to much into this stuff, if you have a general understanding of the angles of spray, the application of paint during the assembly line paint process and do it with your eyes closed it will be perfect factory. Don’t get so jammed up on existing survivors because everyone is different, the actual process of painting and assembly is far more important. When simulating paint over sprays, after studying proper angles and applications, paint it like you’re selling the car and can’t wait to get it out of your garage. When you’re done, your angles of spray are correct and you think it looks like crap then it’s perfect.

It took me close to a full year for me to disassemble my car.....just to take it apart!! I have over 1500 pictures of disassembly just so I could try and "get it right" on reassembly. If I remember correctly there was a Lime Hemi Cuda that somebody restored several years ago. His goal was to make it just like it was back on the dealership floor.....but not in a good way. He had seam sealer everywhere.....overspray everywhere....trunk weatherstrip glue dripping, this car was perfect!! If I remember right the car was never accepted among the masses and when it went up for sale at Barret Jackson, it sold for far less that everybody thought. I personally like the car, I never saw it in real life but all the pictures I saw, it looked very authentic. OK, lets go back to the subject at hand. Mike, the car is looking real nice and I hope you keep us informed and updated.

It wasn't accepted as a "dealership vehicle" that looked "new". Had you seen the car in person you would have had thought it was a survivor with 10,000 miles! Flash rust on a new car.....absolutely possible! Rust flaking from the underside(lip)trunk sheet metal, etc.....not a chance! Taking the "worst case scenario" for every aspect of a factory vehicle is not the best formula to adopt for any restoration. The problem with that particular vehicle was that it was restored to emulate the "survivors" that were used as a format during it's restoration. Had it been presented in that fashion it would have been a hit!

Got some more work done yesterday. Inner fenders/quarters, cowl/core support and rockers.
I studied pictures of survivors I have as well as spending time on the 3,900 mile Cuda to come up with my spray patterns. They were all so different, however, you could see a common theme.

Now that's a gem, a good job done on the wiper motor by a very good friend of mine in Canada. You might have heard of him, he goes by "You da Man" his real name is Jules.

Should there not be paint spray one the negative cable? Could be wrong, seems I usually am per the Misses. ("You're right honey") Mike, looks like a very nice job but for OE a bit over-restored, such as paint on the underside of the frame rails and such. Pay backs are hell pal, aren't they? You are going for an OE restoration? Thought you told me when I was doing the hemicuda that I was just asking for a headache by trying for OE? My 1.5¢ BTW still need that NOS heat control valve? I will send it over just for your OE competition grief.

2 coats of 3M Body Schutz and Transtar over the top. Also made a custom tip for the Schutz gun for a better spray pattern.

Mike - Looking great! Hard to believe how much you have accomplished in such a short time. Dave, Steve, Tom and I would like to come to your party - but you know we have to catch up to you on the big V! Here is a little something to go with your collection..."Furious Fuchsia Pearl" (not FM3)- we are about to go into production with it... not as cool as yours though! Dave

I'm extremely jellous on two levels. First of all, it seems that everyone is in love with this restorer and this job. Don't get me wrong, it looks wonderful. But, if I spent 542 hours on a body like that one, the membership here would crucify me. Likewise, when we document and restore parts as they came on the car, I'm told that it's still wrong and that it has to be how the masses expect it to be regardless of the way it was originally built. Most importantly, I had that car bought, sort of. I worked with Denny all weekend at the Nats and had agreed upon all of the details. But he had a very important timetable that would have to slip because I needed a few more days to pull together the funds. Nothing against the OP or the seller. They both did what needed to be done. I didn't want a stupid FM3 car anyway!

What I did was present my one and only offer and showed Dennis the cash on Friday and to come see me if he was interested. It worked pretty simple, he showed up Saturday late afternoon accepting the offer, then I paid for the car and we were on our way within an hour to drop the car off at my shop and returned that same night for vending Sunday.
I do all my own cars so if I choose to spend that much time for the level of perfection I expect so be it, they're my cars. If I were restoring cars for a living I certainly couldn't do them that way. So, what exactly was your intent with this post, is it to promote your 25K max jobs? Are you upset someone was able to step up with the jack to pay for the T/A?

Actually, I was being completely truthful and honest. I'm quite jellous. The car is truly beautiful. You have it and I don't.
I was also trying to inject a little humor as evidenced by my last paragraph with crybaby icon. I guess that isn't appreciated here.
It was my first trip to the nats and I enjoyed it very much. I wasn't looking to buy anything but even if I were, I never would have brought $35k in cash with me.
The better man won, plain and simple.
I'm still jellous and there's nothing you can do about it.

That undercoating looks sweet. What is Transtar? I googled it. Didn't find anything.

I used 2 coats of 3M Body Schutz #08864 and a thin coat of Transtar 4361F quick dry rubberized undercoating over the top. The Transtar I put on was strickly to give it that factory looking sheen since the 3M Schutz is to dull. The tip I made is from copper pipe that I threaded and smashed the end so I was spraying through a slot instead of a hole.

Here is the pig before I put my hands on it. I had to hand draw the assembly date and try to reproduce the original look of the original. I guess it could of been a little sloppier.

Maybe Dave W and/or Mike can chime in to let us know how the process to make the driveshaft look so good.I know many hours, but what steps, materials, grades of sandpaper, etc is used.Last time I looked outside I still see 24+ of snow to melt so I got time...
It all depends on the original condition of your drive shaft, The drive shaft in the tube trick works great if the drive shaft is not pitted real bad, if it is pitted you need to sand and polish working your way down to fine paper. but the part numbers on drive shafts are very shallow and go away quick, I use the Evapo rust (about 1 1/2 gallons (Harber freight) has it, put the drive shaft in a 6' piece of 4" pvc pipe capped on one end, let the drive shaft soak for 24 hrs. remove it and was it off real well, then I use steel wool to polish it, take the torch and heat all of the welds to re-blue them, paint the cast ends with cast spray, take a file to the original grinding marks on the yokes, install some DETROIT u-joints and your there, seal the whole shaft with plasti cote, and wipe it down with very fine wool to take the shine off after it is dry, originally these drive shafts looked like new steel exhaust pipe, it is very hard to replocate this look if the shaft is rusty to start with, hope this helps you. We started this project the beginning of November, however, it seems like it's taken forever to get this car done. Another week or 2 and she will be ready for the road again.

I do have a question though, could you get chrome mirrors on AARs and T/As?
Chrome? Don't think so, I wanted to cover the mirror hole on the car since I haven't painted one for it yet.

I imagine it's "easy" to get a car done in this short of a time frame when you don't need to re-body,or I mean replace most of the sheet metal...Looks great Mike.

Painted body color only on AAR & TA. (otherwise I would have used chrome on mine. I like chrome.)
I didn't see headlight bezels on your parts list Mike. What did you use for headlight bezels?
Absolutely Beautiful Car!!

There was a set of NOS bezels in the back set of the car when I bought it from Dennis.

In reference to your engine color. What was your formula on the paint you put on it. I imagine probably an Epoxy primer, and a "spray" on not spray bomb. I like the color tint on it as opposed to the high orange color out there. Can you share your paint code?
We dusted the engine with grey primer to get a lighter color base so the Plastikote #226 Chrysler Orange engine enamal would cover better. With the light base, the orange looks really close to original.

Would that be with DAR 9000 black and Ditzler flattening additive? Just curious as that is about what we have used in our shop, usually with hardener. You actually have to custom blend depending on particular part, environment (Humidity, temp, pressures, etc.) as even on a booth the outside conditions can effect the outcome at the extremes.

great,GREAT job... a question you painted the entire car 1st, then oversprayed the chassis with primer??
our hemi cuda is on the spinner, and ready for paint, hence the question...
The car was sprayed with grey sealer than painted base/clear. The single stage pink over spray was last.

is that a AMD repo bumper ?? It lookes like the one I sent back because it was bowed up in the middle. Challenger bumpers should have a downward bow toward the middle like the tailamps and rear vailance.
Nope, rechromed original.

Mike, your T/A looks awesome. It looked like a nice project when it was at the Nationals. It's cool to follow along with the build. Do you have the air cleaner lid orange paint custom mixed, bought from a vendor, or is it "off the shelf"?
Nothing special, "Chrysler Orange" right from Plastikote.

I don't think so Darren, I'm doing Carlisle because the T/A & AAR's are being featured and it's inside so I won't have to baby sit.
Mike, Bring it I'll volunteer to do the baby setting.
