Just got my new roll cage from Aslton and Looking for some opinion. First its a 12 point cage mild steel. I got all but the front supports tacked in place with my little miller 135 110 and seemed to penatrate pretty well and was tempted to weld it up but wondered if anyone here has welded up an entire cage with the 110? I intend to take it to a friend to use the 220 for more penitration but wanted to hear from experience. Second, my car has ladder bars and is not back halfed, Should I put in the x brace and is it necessary? I will only be going 10.0 in a 68 dart

how thick is the steel tubing? If it is within capacity of the machine, have at it. the 135 will do up to 1/4" steel right??

I think they rate those to 1/4" with good metal to metal penetration. If it looks solid and seems solid, I wouldn't see a reason not too.

I burn thru sometime with my machine because it is TOO big, a smaller welder like yours would do me a alot of good sometimes!

Are you a great welder?

I wouldn't weld a cage with a 110 machine. I sure wouldn't weld it, then go over it again with a 220 machine.

Use the 110 to tack it together, then finish it with a 220 machine.

I have a 135 110v machine... I'll bet that machine is rated for 1/4" when using fluxcore wire...not with gas (thats what mine is). I'd just tack it with the 110 then weld it out with your buddies machine.

I use to use a 135 for doing exhaust... that was .062
to .080 thats about all its really good for, no way
would I weld a cage with it.... I have no idea why they
say it'll weld heavy stuff like a 1/4" which I dont
think its that heavy anyways... might be 3/16"(rated)

Agree. No chance you can weld a cage with a 135 welder. I tacked mine with the 135 and went 220 to weld it for real.

I welded my cage with a Daytona Mig 110 machine. Used it on 140 amp settng with a .35 wire and 75/25 mix gas. It welds very well has alot of penetration. I trust my 110 Mig and my skills to have built a solid cage.

If you have any hesitations about the quality of your welds or machine then use the 220 that you have access to make sure your tubes fit tight.

here is a pic

I welded mine up with a Millermatic 135 (110v) and it did just fine. Great penetration. That mild steel tubing is only .134 thick, just over 1/8". But what do I know I've only been welding for 40+ years.

The 140 machine I used had a fair amount more power
than the 135 I used... I thought the 135 was a piece
of DO-DO... these were machines I used in the lab
where I worked and welded everyday but the welders
I own for myself are all 220 units... I am thinking
of picking up a 140 for the race car trailer with a
small bottle

110 machines only have a 20% duty cycle...they fall off rapidly in their performance. 220 machines have a 60% duty cycle....they keep consistancey. Don't cut corners Mike...do it with the 220 machine.

Will do Ron, and everyone else! Thanks
Looks like if you know what your doing you could do it with a 110 but til i'm great at it I think i'll do it with the big gun.
