I have a 71 cuda clone from way back. Which 6 speed would work the best? 340 with A/C. 2009 Challenge?

I'd recommend the Keisler T56 package, the mods are already performed for you to install this tranny, and have the shifter in the stock 71 location,.....you can choose up to a .50 overdrive

Thanks, What Axle ratio is good for highway with the .50 overdrive. I will most likly use a 245 -15 tire size and it is a 340. I hope to drive the car as I have had and driven it many years. Since 1982

Depends on your intentions, you want a nice stoplight terror, and highway cruiser to boot,....go with 4;10-4:56 rear gears.....6th gear will still allow you to obtain 130-140 Mph, or cruise at 90 MPH @ 2000 RPM,.....or if your looking for speeds over 150 MPH,.....3.23/3.55 rear gears, and still have "respectable" performance on the streets

Anyone do this mod on an e-body yet?

I'm sure the torsion bar x-member will need to be thoroughly hacked, but wondering about the tunnell itself if it'll have to be completely replaced or just hacked/patched.

There's no hacking,...unless of course the installers skill level usually entails that degree of mechanical skill, as with ANY application where a componet is not originaly designed for that application, there will be some mods to perform, wether recommended by the vendor, or percieved by the installer.....but no you won't be "hacking" your crossmember or tunnel for the NEW T56 installs......granted some of the early Keisler Tremec swaps had clearance issusers, which some owners refused to mod their car to accept,....like everything in life, things change and adapt from evolution,...so have many of Keislers offerings,....if your a paint daub/numbbers/originality guy, stay with your stock set up,.....if you like performance, improvement, less engine wear, GREAT gas milage, then install a Keisler TKO or Tremec

Hmm...you sure? I'm aware of mods that may be req'd for the FIVE-speed, but heck, Keisler dosn't even offer the Viper 6-speed on their website, leading me to believe that it's thoroughly a MAJOR mod.

Here's a TR6060 in a Challenger, which I think is very close in dimensions to a T56:

Complete elimination of torsion bar x-member:

Rob,...use the search function on the Keisler site for T-56 applications using the Viper Case with .50 OD,....there's over 150 T56 Tremec applications, bellhousing availability, clutch packages, etc.....if your serious about a T56 .50 Viper Tremec, call Keisler, Gene, Richard or Jeff can assist you with your application, and what's needed/available,....the NEW DogBox RT T56 (no clutch shifting) should be available soon, depending on your projects deadline?

MAJOR CARNAGE to the torsion bar crossmember. I put one in a 70 Challenger and the crossmember has to come out for clearance for the t56. I had a 4 speed tunnel that I pounded out for clearance and I had to cut the seam from the firewall to floorpan and then welded it flat since the spot welds were gone. Also had to grind some of the ears off of the trans and even then I had to drop the angle some for clearance. You'll need to do the job in your picture if you want the engine angle set to factory. I think Dayclona is thinking about the 5 speed install which isn't too dramatic.

Well...I meant Keisler doesn't seem to offer the 6-speed as part of their e-body packages. I'm sure they do for other cars (e.g. GM cars).

Hmm...that's a lot of hackin'. Although I won't be using the torsion cross-member (going w/an Alterkation or XV II suspen.), I just installed a four-speed hump, which I guess now I would have to slaughter to get the right driveline angle.

I don't think canned fish is what he needs in his Ebody

The company he is referring to is Richmond.

We can sell you a mechanically adaptable 6 speed but there will be modification. The six speeds are physically larger and there is no way to make clearance for the torsion bar crossmember.

W/the torsion bar x-member gone, what kind of mount do you use at the tail end of the tranny? Using the OEM four-speed hump, does the shifter come out of the factory shifter hole?

No

Crossmember would be up to you. The shifter location
will not be correct. It will be center and forward of the location. Like the Picture show earlier of Matt D's car. He may actually have the drawlings or a crossmember.

Does anyone currently make an offset shifter or shifter handle for the Viper tranny? I am considering doing a Viper V-10/6-speed swap into a 'Cuda. Or, a 6.1L with a manual tranny (preferably the T-56). I don't fear having the floor modified or customizing a mount. However, having the shifter come through the factory console location would be an important thing for me.

Thanks,
Paul

The Viper shifter is way far forward. The Ebody shifter is about 25 inches back from the bell with a 3 inch offset. It will be tough. The Viper bell is more shallow than the factory Mopar bell. Its shifter is only about 17 inches back from the mounting position. It would be near impossible to get the shifter in the correct location.

If you do this make the motor and trans and older one. The Viper after I think 2000 had no speedo on the trans they all calibrated off the rear end.

If you do this I have a bolt in hydraulic system for that set up.

I have decided to use a 02 Camaro T56 it appears to have a shifter closer than any other. I am hoping to make a offset shifter simular to the viper shifter to get the location closer. I have cut the tunnel part of the floor board out of the camaro, I will be doing a crossmember modification to fit this new tunnel. Quicktime 8074 ($525.00) bolted the t56 to the 5.7 hemi. The input shaft is .200 shorter than the viper (no big deal), but appears to use the same clutch disc as the Viper and the old style chevy I think the Chevy and Mopar pressure plates will interchange as well. The hydrolic master will be tilton 75 seires with special adapter the t56 carrys a throwout/slave cly. Speedo is a Question yet as it only has a electric pickup. I will try to let you know how progess goes. Note the car is still a striped hull in the body work stage.
