Thanks for the hint - It would be exactly what I'm looking for... and very reasonable priced.
But they've lost the guy that made them and have only some left in stock that are purple heart - that's to special for me.
I'll go with plastic and keep an eye on them.
Funny that this does not make a market that people would get their immitates replaced with real wood.
After all these years having a 440 I realized that this means having an attitude... and a budget.

There is/was a market, but it was a small one because few were willing to pay enough to make hand made wood grips a profitable venture. I used to sell them as well, Domingo was having a guy in Peru make them who was a custom guitar maker, they were stunningly beautiful and made the right way with brass inserts and machine screws to hold them on,not just wood screws right into raw wood, but they carried a hefty price tag. The people that bought them were thrilled but at $129.00 retail they didn't sell well and we barely made a profit. The problem is also inventory. Everyone wanted a different color or type of wood, and no two were alike.
I was impressed with Gunslingers simulated wood plastic grips, they did a nice job with those, nice smooth high gloss finish with simlulated wood burl looked very similar to the real wood grips I used to sell.

Here is mine. I got them from Gunslinger at a trade show/swap meet. Hand carved wood. He let me go thru alot of his grips to get the pair I wanted. It appears he doesn't have anymore at the present though... -Michael

I made my own. it may not be a perfect replication, or as smooth, but I'm happy with it. I saw it as a challenge, and took my time hand carving them, and did some minor sanding when done.
I used african ebony hardwood, for the extreme light/dark streaks, but that stuff was SUPER HARD to carve! no splinters, and the "chips" all came off in little shiny flakes, talk about DENSE wood!
I used nothing but a pocket knife and some light sanding, mostly so that I could say I whittled it with a pocket knife.
if I had it to do over again, I'd definitely look at using some sort of power tool like a dremel to do the heavy work.

and my new console that I made to replace the chintzy wood one, which I have since repainted flat black with a light misting of silver to give it a bit of flake/sparkle, similar to the AAR/TA hoods.

Great! I stopped thinking about that assuming I'm not Michelangelo enough to do it right. But may be there is enough winter left to do a try...
So you did copy the "old" ones simply with "your eyes" - means cutting away whatever did not look like a pistol grip? Comparing and comparing... that way?
yea, pretty much all by eye.
the only thing I did do was make a paper template of the base, the flat part that goes against the handle, that way I had the right dimensions to fit the metal handle, once I had the basic shape transfered to the square block of wood, I just started trimming away.
my "thumb ledge" for lack of a better term, on the left grip isn't as sharp as the ones Domino made, I suppose I could sand it down and work at it some more, but I'm happy with it how it is really.
to finish it, I lightly misted the wood with dupont paint, the same color as the body color on my truck, --just enough to give it some color without hiding the grains in the wood--then clear coat over that.
Total time it took me was probably 5 or 6 hours, so $140 is a steal of a price! --of course, it looks like Domino's got more "professional" tools than a pocket knife, and has practice, he could probably knock a set out pretty quick compared to how long it took me!

So please all parties interested, please post with your choice of grips and if there are enough orders to make it worthwhile I will make em. Choose: Flamed maple....with flamed maple you can choose to have em painted any color, even high impact colors. Oak: The only finish available is the one shown on the pics above. Pau Ferro: Hand rubbed oil finish. These are nice and very similar to the woodgrain on the rallye dashes and center console on the E Bodies. Price is $140 for each set of grips. Incl Shipping. okput me up on 1 set off the satin OAK type please mr d.

Domingo are you making the grips or acting as a distributor for the maker ? If you are making them it does make it easier for us to communicate our needs etc without any confusion. I like dealing with the folks making parts much better. I would have a problem paying with a credit card for goods in South America ,so will this be pay pal or money order upon recent of the product ? Would you do a 10 % off for 2 sets, if so I'll take 2 sets of OAK SATIN. Those grips are nice.
I still want to order 2 sets of OAK SATIN.

My buddy who is a custom guitar luthier makes em.
Payment would be via pay pal.
Sorry it'd be a fixed price...this is a small run I dont stock any all would be custom ordered. One time deal only....I really dont make em any more because they are really not worth it (business wise) but I am willing to make em for those who missed the boat and would like a set.
They are NICE and I can tell you no other wooden grips sold out there even start to compare with these. These are on a league of theur own. My buddy is a gifted individual when it comes to woodworking and finishes.

Also is the grip in post #8 from Sycboi Pau Ferro?
No, the South American Pau Ferro is similar in grain and pattern as Sycboi (which is a Phillipines species), but the PF is more deeply hued and slightly more reddish like cedar, I've had the two side by side, the PF is WAY prettier.

I made my own a couple years ago out of oak to match the vintage steering wheel I had. After tracing a pattern onto the wood, I used a right angle air powered die grinder to rough them in then finish sanded, stained and cleared them. It took a little time, but if you have a die grinder and some roloc discs a lot of you can do it yourselves, I think.

OK guys.... If you want one please post a reply on the thread stating how many would you want and what color/wood along with your contact information. Once I get enough orders going on this thread I will contact everybody and start the run. I dont have a pic of how Pau Ferro grips look like. They are really nice. Its a very dense wood. The oak has a more "original" look to it. But the Pau Ferro is BY FAR a nicer wood. Im posting a pic of a Pau Ferro blank and a Pau Ferro fingerboard on a bass guitar so you can see how the wood looks like. http://www.blabased.nl/Woodweb/Pau%20ferro.jpghttp://www3.alembic.com/img/ws_fg_pauferroL.jpgIll let this thread run a little bit more and then I will contact you all with all the order details....thanks!!!

This is Gunslinger jumping in on this thread. We have been having a lot of calls on real wood grips. Yes, our carver passed away a while back and we are unable to find someone to carve our grips reasonably. After much deliberation, we are investigation CNC wood carving. In a few months, we will carve custom grips ourselves. From investigating the process, you will not see any noticeable difference between CNC and hand carved grips. CNC grips will be machine made, but they will need to be hand finished. The only major difference you will notice will be the price. I am a firm believer in producing a product that will fit the average person’s budget. Yes, things can always be improved on, but how much do you want them improved on? Improvement costs money. We attend a show almost every weekend from April to Sept, so we meet a lot of you in person. If you have had any problems or questions, we are there to help and resolve them. When we actually start the production of the wood grips, we will list it on our new and imporved web site and we will change our add on Moparts. Hang in there for a little, and you will be surprised on the quality.

The thing I don't like is a coating. I want to feel real wood in my hand. And a coating will get ribbed off after a while? While wood will wear the signs of usage with proudness But domingo offered all 3 types without coating, right? Pau Ferro is not coated but has "hand rubbed oil finish" which would make it difficult to be coated ...

The grips are patterned/sized from the original plastic grips, they will fit any makers handle (automatic or 4speed) that factory grips fit, you should expect the same fit, same gaps, etc.
*The examples I posted were hand made to fit the custom stainless handle they are mounted on, hence the grips were fitted with very tight tolerances all around with no gaps, etc.

You can also have the pau ferro clearcoated in a glossy finish. The stuff I use is polyester and its VERY durable. It wont wear off. Its almost like glass. I can also make em satin clear which gives a "raw wood" feel. Also, the Pau ferro can be hand rubber oil, and the feel is similar to an electric guitar fingerboard.

As far as I'm aware, no. He still sells the automatic versions through Resto Ricks site but not 4 speeds AFAIK. You could make a special request of Domingo, he would have the final say on that one. I know it was quite an involved process for him to trek across Lima (HUGE city) to the opposite side of town to visit the shops where they were being made.

from what I can tell...and from what I remember after buying one of Domingos shifters, with the green grips..The clear coat is better on domingos...But if he isnt making them..then? I would also like to get another shifter...because let mine go, when I sold the dodge demon, it was in...been cussing myself ever since! because it was perfect !!! Domingo.....hopefully, you can maybe...bring these back for a small run??? if I remember..wasnt the price raised up to something like 600 bucks? That..seems a little high..but they were THAT nice....i would still buy one.

I told my son he should make some.We have a ton of black walnut, oak, tiger maple etc,If he can make bows Im sure he can make something as simple as grips. He even makes custom walking sticks. He is now working on a bow with deer antlers for the strings to attach and waiting to see if his cousin can get him some rattle snake skins.Plus he is doing another one for a friend. He is also making a bed from black walnut that will be rustic.Rocky

Yeah those look great, I got mine from the same guy on cuda-challenger.com ,Honestly they look pretty decent. I don't know what the others look like to make a judgement. I would love to see the difference in a side by side comparison.

I picked up a couple grips from the Cuda-Challenger seller. Scott's description is pretty accurate especially on the finish. The ones from CC are not exact copies in shape and size of the original pistol grip handles. The pictures below are the CC handles next to original plastic pistol grip handles. The are a bit wider and have more material where your thumb and the palm of your hand goes. They fit the shifter handle very well and are tight. Even though they aren't exact copies, I honestly think the handles sold off CC feel BETTER. The palm of my hand feels more comfortable resting on the wider CC handles especially in 1st and 3rd gear. It also feels more secure in my hand. If you gotta have a perfect copy of an original pistol grip the CC ones are NOT for you, but it your looking for comfort and cool color options the CC handles are nice for the price. ps. The grips pictured are light Spalted Maple. I actually bought 2 pair to try, a light and dark set. I ended up using the other(darker) set on my Challenger.

I bought a set for my Super Bee. Second car down from top: http://www.idlehandswoodwork.com/pictures.htmlThe pictures don't do them justice. I wanted something custom, but not over the top. The grips came out incredible, exceeded my expectations. Nick is great to work with, communicates well and does awesome work.

John, No they are held together with rare earth magnets. On Nick's website the E5 grips are mine, and I have had absolutely no problems with the grip halves moving in any way. To remove them you can slide a credit card between the grip and shift lever and they come right off.
