Any one know how to do this?

I have a 1990 Truck blocking my car, and need it out!

I really don't want to break the column, and the owner of the truck can't remember where he put the keys.

Thank you

Do you know if the door and ignition key are the same? If you don't feel like calling a locksmith, I'd probably pull 1 of the door locks out, take it apart and make a key to fit/work. That way you have a key since the owner doesn't know where he put it. Jim

A locksmith will know how. It won't be that expensive. $10-15.

im gonna venture a possible solution
IF its the kind of column that has a upper and lower plastic piece that unscrews to remove from the column just behind the steering wheel, you remove those pieces, then you can use a tamperproof torx remover bit and take out the complete ign switch with the key tumbler part and all in one chunk, this will make the column lock and not turn, but if you get another electric switch without the tumbler part and install it in the column then you can start the truck with a set of needle nose pliers,no key needed,i dont think you will have much luck getting the tumbler out of the electric part without destroying something

Well its new years day, and the weekend, so the lock smith is out.

this is a 1990, the column has more in common with muscle era cars, if it wasn't tilt it would be the same.

I need this truck out of the way like yesterday.

Thank you for the idea. But, its a 3/4 truck, and I'd have to push it 100 feet by myself, and I'm pretty sure all but the biggest of floor jacks would bend under it.

I guess I'll just bust the column.

Does the truck run/drive? If you pull the steering wheel and remove the steering wheel lock plate, you can remove the ignition switch mounted on lower left side of column. You can then put a small screwdriver in the switch(still connected to the harness) and start the vehicle. You can now start and move the vehicle around at will. No money involved unless you don't have any tools and a lock plate remover. Jim

This is what I am trying to do, but I thought you needed a special tool to remove the lock plate?

and yes the truck runs and drives.

To remove that lock ring I have used a wrench uder the steering wheel retainer nut and a socket to push the plate down enough to remove the snap ring and to install it the same way. Put the open end of the wrench around the steering shaft under the nut and put the socket between the wrench handle and the plate. Use the outside end of the wrench as a lever to push down against the socket and plate. While holding the wrench down use a small screwdriver to pry the snapring up and there you go.

I'll try this, I've never messed with a modern column *ignition in it* let alone tilt!
