Anyone know how this weather strip is attached? This is a Soft Seal that is supposed to be correct for E bodies made after 1/1972. Does the rib mount down or up? Is the flat part (the one on the left of the picture) supposed to go flush to the trunk lip? The shop manual only shows the weather strip from the early E bodies in its illustration (the tail lamps are the 71 version in the manual). Or should I just get an early weather strip and put it in the way the book says to? Thanks for your help, Craig

Just had this same problem last night! On my 73 Cuda. The flat part goes down....(I called metro to verify) , I fit it and glued it on. Went to shut the lid ... No way was it fitting!!! Bulged the lid up and put a huge amount of pressure. I ended up having to rip it off, and i just ordered a eariler style from columbia parts on ebay. What i dont under stand is what is so different abount a late 73-74 trunk lid/ gutter that makes that huge weatherstrip even work?

I am with you. There is no physical difference that I know of. I put it on the same way initially and pulled it off for the same reason. I am going to go with the early stuff too. Snoopy posted the factory drawings on how to install it and I think that is the way to go. My factory manual agrees with Snoopy but he had much more detail. While my resto is not totally correct, I wanted it as close as possible within reasonable dollars. I just want a dry trunk. Thanks for your reply Craig

Maybe what happened is they realized the earlier style sucked and leaked over time, so they went bigger thinking it would be better?

That is quite possible but the aftermarket stuff went off the deep end. It is way too thick to work. There is only so much baloney you can stuff before the sandwich leaks. Craig

I think I got mine from Tom at R/T. The bodyshop wanted all the weatherstripping on the car before they did any of the panel alignment. I never heard that they had a problem with the seals holding the panels out of possition. All I know is that the trunk, door and hood seals/bumpers were in place when the bodywork was being done.
They told me the same thing. I have mine back and they said bring it back and they will do the final tweaks to put everything in place. Craig

Here's an original 74 for reference... someone makes them in this profile, just can't remember who! Tom @ RT Specialties likely has them.

Thanks. I will get in touch with him. The originals were so mishapen I could not rule out the Soft Seals but was skeptical. Craig

is that the actual shape? or is your thumb deforming it as you pinch it to hold it?
Well it's not my thumb.. , but the sample I have is that shape without being squeezed. Between the flap shape and hollow core, it compresses pretty easily.
