I like both "RAT" and "HOT" Rods. I havent seen why you call them "unsafe". I plan on building a Rod. When its done anyone can call it Ratrod or Hotrod doesnt offend me none. But to each there own. What would you call a 32 Ford with a 2000 corvette engine?

Nice Car Nice Motor ...Bad combination?

I understand the latest trend for some hot rodders is the unfinished look or patina look, I think the comment about rat rods being unsafe is that some of them are built without concern for safety. this may mean not boxing a frame (which some people consider a safety neccessity), running to small or brakes or inappropriately sized reservoirs because they look cool, unsafe floors or poor geometry... these are just examples I have seen. Other people see a really low truck or car and think they are unsafe...and probably would be on the average street.

All of this is just my opinion.

Real life encounters with real unsafe rat rod is an eye opening experence. Some have no floors! Some have no suspension at all! Some have very small rear brakes with nothing at all on the front. Some have jaged rusty steel protusions sticking out that can cut you on contact. I've seen very poor welds, and even poor tack welds, they didn't even bother trying a full weld. The list is endless. If you have the oppertunity to see a real rat rod up close, you walk away wondering how it even got where it was sitting. Some are so bad, I wouldn't even want to push it across the street let alone riding anywhere in it. If you get the oppertunity to speak with a real rat rodder their attitude comes out. They are volger and "built" their car simply for the shock factor with no intension of ever making it near safe.

If you see the real thing and talk with the owner, you would have a completely different view of an unfinished car that has actually being built with an intent of being a safe ride. Rat rods and unfinished cars are not the same, and after seeing a rat rod, you would probably not mix up the two again. That would be provided of course you actually looked at the car in question and not walked by with your nose in the air because the paint wasn't perfect. Gene

What do you guys consider to small of brake. What do you think they ran in the 50 and 60s. Nobody upgraded the brake than. Cars of that era had single resivior master cylinders and where fine back than. They didnt have to many rodders boxing frames in the 50s either. My truck hardly has a floor and the front suspension is on the bump stop brackets and it has rust that would more than likely cut you so does that make it unsafe to drive, it has seat belts and brakes? Ive seen a couple "Rat Rods" in person and they looked safe to me. The guy that just through them together are idiots. I dont care what name they call them. Im just sayin everyone has a different perspective on these things. I know the difference, Ive been around "HOT RODS" my hole life. I have 2-'49 Fords and a '53 Ford wagon. The one 49 is getting a Ford flathead with Merc internals(merc block has a crack that could be sleeved) and the other 49 will remain stock Flatty and the wagon will get a decent 351 Windsor. I also have a 52 Dodge truck (that currently has a chevy in it ) that Im going to use a Fifth Ave or simalure front suspension out of to get it on the ground. Also my dad has been Building cars for close to 50yrs. So with that said Does anybody have pics of any RATRODS or Suade HOT RODS. Also In my eyes a WILLYS is and always will be a "GASSER"(MY DREAM CAR )

With respect, this "ain't" the '50's or '60's

Even in the small home town where I grew up, traffic is not 1000 times worse than back then. Here's the other thing. If you are following a newer car with good stoppers, and he slaps the binders for a dog or kid, and all you have is your old '50's back drums, no fronts, and little 'un's at that, you aren't -a- gonna stop.

so far's I'm concerned, ANY street car without front brakes is a death trap.

I NEVER said I would run without front brakes. I prefer brake on all 4 corners. There are PLENTY of cars running drum on all 4s out there, not everyone can fork over $2grad for a Disc convertion. I know I wouldnt. I think its dumb to run without front brakes, Besides the dumb thats behind you in the same senario could have a 2008 whatever and smash rite into you because hes not paying attention, Also dont ride the person infront of you's and you wont hit them. The only thing I recomend is replace all the brake lines in the older car if they are rusty even if there isnt leaks it can snap at any time witch is the down fall of the single res mastercylinder. Otherwise they are just fine. Ive had a line snap on a 51 Ford I had and Cross traffic didnt have the stop sign, and on that note a Elcamino I had with Factory discs in front had the mastercylinder fail So as long as your brake system is in working order and nothing fails stock brakes are fine on all 4 corners of course. I know alot of guys that dont "Update" their brake because the stock is fine. My 53 Wagon might get disc up front but it depends on price when the time comes. Big brake kit are for bigger wheels for the most part because the guys that get them arent runnin 14s or 15s and that posses a prob with me because Im not a big fan of "bigger" wheels. Ive only seen a few vehicles I liked and thats rare. So in the end I WOULD NOT RUN WITHOUT FRONT BRAKES BECAUSE ITS NOT VERY SAFE. Also why would you be speeding while riding thier , That itself isnt safe.

Why does everything have to turn into a debate. I just ask for pics and everyone turned it into a debate on what a ratrod or hotrod is. So please post pics of 40s back Rats or Suade HotRods Thanks.

If its a hodgepodge of throw away parts from 17 differnt make of cars and none of them have been restored, its a ratrod.
A streetrod and or hotrod may have a satin finish but everything else is restored by painting or replating and alot of finished detail work.
Thats my opinion and everyone has one of those.
They are free.

I said what I said because it sounded to me like you were actually DEFENDING old systems. I will concede, that on a light hot rod, there's no reason that drums can't be perfectly adequate.

I DO take issue with your defense of single master cylinders. Because there are so many dual masters available, there is no excuse in my book not to use them on a "new" build. I certainly don't advocate that you have to jump up, and immediately run to the shop so you can upgrade all your cars.

To set the record straight, I "wasn't" speeding, and I "wasn't" ..."riding thier "

All I was trying to point out, is, that when you run up against a modern car in a tight jam, you just might be surprised at how small that space gets in front of you

If you want to see pictures of "traditional" rods, that being cars built to a specific time peroid, you want to stop over at the HAMB board. Word of advice, do NOT say Rat Rod over there, they will hand you your . That board is intended for hot rods built before 1964 and cover mostly American cars of all manufacturers. I suck at doing the link thing, but someone here can give you an address. Gene

I am a long-time member of the HAMB (wwww.jalopyjournal.com) and find the term "rat rod" to be completely offensive. Anyone who actually says they are "building a rat rod" usually has no clue about hot rodding and ens up building an unsafe pile of crap with no consistancy in the build/design.

Uuuggghhh.... I could go on, but I'll stop there. Just know that you should never NEVER NEVER call another man's hot rod a "rat rod" or you'll probably get punched in the mouth.

I think that calling a traditional rod a rat rod is like calling your wife a . Just not something you should use in public .

Just my 2 cents...
