I drilled and tapped a small hole in the water pump housing in line with the cam. Then installed a set screw and adjusted it to about .002 clearance between it and the front cover. I sealed the set screw with teflon pipe dope. I have about 2000 miles on it with no problems.

That's why I like aluminum covers, but welding a extra layer of metal inside or outside the stock covers usually cures the flexing problem.
Bob, about how thick on the outside do you think would eliminate the flex?
I also like the idea of drilling and tapping the housing.Hhhmmm...

I to you for coming up with a simple effective way to solve it.

Add a strap of 1/16 steel inside or out and tackweld it in numerous spots to stiffen the cover.Indy makes a cast aluminum cover as well as others mentioned.Indys cover runs between $110 and $125 depending on who you buy from.

The billet cover that I posted pictures of fits with stock water pumps and stock dampers. The Indy cast cover doesn't. The Indy cover also doesn't have an adjustable TDC pointer and it doesn't have the removeable center section. But it is fairly inexpensive.
Your correct Andy. The Indy cover takes a longer hub or use a spacer. The Indy has a cast timing tab and we usually find absolute TDC at the #1 piston and mark the tab accurately.

I set the .002 clearance using a feeler gage. Of course I had to take the pump on and off a few times to get this set. Then I set a precision parallel across the water pump flanges and depth miced to get the dimension, took the set screw out, coated it with teflon paste and reinstalled it to the dimension. I work at a tool and die shop so I can borrow parallels and depth mics easily.
After some thought this can be set without the use of precision tools as follows:
Drill and tap hole in W/P housing in line with camshaft with the pump out. Bolt housing to engine. Install set screw with loctite or teflon paste from the front of the housing using a feeler gage between it and the front cover to set the gap (I used .002). Bolt water pump in and you are done.

The Hughes cover looks great but it's pretty many dollars. Indy is a definite NO do! Is there anything in the middle?
Not really. Muscle Motors tooled up a cover but evidently their vendor couldn't make the parts. MagnumHP used to make a cover but I'm not sure if they are available any longer. 440Source has a fabbed cover.
