I put a 440 in my 87 4x4 w150.....It has a single plug in distributor...however, factory on this was a 360 4bbl with dual plug in distributor...I picked the plug that looked like one off my single plug in distributor...Spark is weak.wont fire...Do I need to splice the other plug wiring into the other one? Or start all over with a Mopar brain plug that you get when you convert points to electronic? and rewire it?

thanks..Jeff

Do you have a wiring diagram? There is a relay on the firewall that switches between the 2 pickups. Do away with it and make sure the wires for the pickup you are using wind up going to the ECU. Recheck the timing when you get it wired correctly. As for the spark being weak, how did you get the wires to reach the dist. on the 440? Double check the connections and the polarity.

I'm a little confused here.

If the 440 distributor has 1 wire, then it has points.

If it has a two wire harness, than it is the electronic unit.

Maybe post a pic.

Does the 87 use a regular looking moapr Ecu?

Do you have a 5 pin ECU and Mopar brain plug AKA the ECU pentastar connector and 4 terminal ballast? If not I'd get a replacement 4 pin ECU at your parts house & someone here has them for cheap and a used pentastar connector from a yard or if no time to go there order a new one (or a used one from here) & a 2 terminal ballast From MP & wire it up with the archives diagrams & you'll be up & running in no time.

I think the 87 has the Lean Burn type distributor which has two pickups/connectors and if I remember right there is no Mechanical advance inside the dist.

Since you have swapped it out for a single pickup distributor I would suggest you replace the wiring to the ECU & distributor. The harness is cheap enough and it would make sure you have a good setup. I am not sure how much difference there is in the wiring for the lean burn systems beyond the second pickup but that is definitely a biggie. Better to bypass it all and start fresh.

Here's a diagram I had saved. Racer 413 is right, find and eliminate that relay and wire it for one pickup. Good luck!

THANKS FELLA'S..I WAS LOOKING AT SAME DIAGRAM...I WONDERED IN MY MIND IF I NEEDED TO CHANGE IT TO A SINGLE RELAY--I HAVE AN EXTRA HARNESS WIRE PLUG...I WAS HOPING FOR A "QUICK FIX"....IE..."SPLICE THIS WIRE, HERE"...BUT NO GO....MY MIND WAS STUCK AS TO HOW TO GET AROUND THE RELAY WHERE START/RUN ARE ON 2 SEPARATE PLUG INS...JEFF

at the relay, connect the wire from the "run" pickup to the wire from the ECU, terminal 4. Tape off the remaining wires. you don't need the relay anymore.

Pretty easy..i unplugged that relay on fire wall..then took the 2 distributor wires slots 4 and 5 on the ign brain connector and spliced 2 wires directly over to the sigle p/u distributor...fired up my fresh rebuilt 440 .060 over ...finally got it running....then i had an extremely lean 650 avs...swapping that out for 750 1971 avs..good to go.......More torque than a stinking Belly Button 6.1 they keep advertising lately.,thanks..Jeff
