I have a 340 motor I want to change to a different intake manifold. Motor has been blueprinted. What is the easiest way to tell
how much needs to be machined from the intake
side to side..front to back? Thanks for your input!

Blueprinted? You mean balanced and straightened up and proper clearences? Was the deck milled shorter or anything? Why wouldn't a stock intake bolt up? If you cut the block down the intake might need to be cut too because then the positions of the heads in relation to each other will have changed.

I'm no expert but why are you thinking your intake won't fit?

Blueprinting a motor is basically everything you mentioned. Once you have this done STOCK parts will not just bolt on. Thanks

what makes you think the difference wasn't taken off the mating surface on the heads?

"or anything" I meant the head milled shorter. I didn't assume anything about the heads or block.

Unfortunately 'blueprinting' means different things to different people. A lot of idiots like to say their motor is blueprinted to impress someone. Usually it's the same guy in the gas station that looks at my demon and says he had a nova just like that one. "with a bad ass 383 stroker, blueprinted and balanced!" and all of them had "rock-crusher" 4spds too!

To me blueprinting means checking everything and measuring everything to get the most performance and or longevity out of a motor, and making sure all the parts work with each other. Like following a 'blueprint' or plan.

So when you 'blueprinted' your motor, did you deck the heads to get a certain cc combustion chamber? Did you maybe rework all the chambers in a stock casting so there are no variations in volume? Did you deck the block to get it square, or to raise compression or zero deck the pistons for quench with a closed chamber? These are things you could do while 'blueprinting'. Because your motor is 'blueprinted' does not tell me what you did.

I am not an expert or engine building big-shot, but please don't tell me what blueprinting means when you don't know what your 'blueprint' was for your motor. The information that would let someone help you is more along the lines of the answer to this question:

Was anything done to the block or heads that would alter the positions of the heads in relationship to each other? If you know this then you know if you need to take special care in mounting your intake to get it to seal. If your engine was 'blueprinted' by a shop then call them and ask or have them change/modify/install your intake for you.

Personally, I would remove your current intake and test fit your new one. Then it will be easy to see whats going on.

Good luck man.

I thought I was the only one who had to listen to those jackasses.

Same guys don't know the difference between an engine and a motor.

Uh? Was that out loud?

I think that's why he ask how to tell because he doesn't know. Not for a lecture. You guys make
us dummies afraid to ask a question. I never got one hit on my last question. By the way I have
this balanced and blueprinted, oh never mind.

Nah, man! I am just a beginner myself. I just got a little puffed up when he asked for help and then tried to tell me what blueprinted means. I only wanna help, but I got pride too!

I tried to ask him the right questions, and even explain what he's looking at and why a stock intake would or wouldn't fit.

If you are gonna be around hotrods you gotta be ready to deal with some real a$$holes. In fact some of the people I learned the most from are real a$$holes (in life, not on this board)

Anyway- to the original poster- if you have any questions, please ask them, and be specific. I will answer as best as I can and I know the least around here- somebody will probably correct me if I am wrong. I'm just trying to give back a little and ended up showing my ass...
