I found a guy on craigslist advertising 86 318 heads. Says they are complete and in decent shape. I'm going to see if I can get some pix from him. He's more than an hour away, so I'd like to find out all I can...

So, am I correct in thinking that all 318 heads from '86 would be desirable 302 heads? I'm looking for something to replace the original heads on my '67 318. Each of my current heads has a cross threaded sparkplug hole...

Also, I've read that Magnum heads were the same between 318/360. Is that true, and if so, does that apply to these pre-Magnum heads? Would these heads be any good for a 360 should I decide go that route? (Still thinking about working a deal on a 360 Dad has)

and finally, is there anything in particular I should watch out for here?

Thanks!

Should be 302s, since they started showing up in '85.

Magnum 318/360 heads are the same.

302s can be used on a 360, but they don't flow enough (in stock form, anyway) for higher rpms. Some guys use them on truck 360s for low/mid range torque.

They are crack prone, so check 'em real close.

Thanks a bunch. Is there a particular place/chamber that likes to crack more often?

Only the 318 2-bbl got the '302 heads. The 360s and 318 4-bbls got the open chamber, large port 360 heads. Has the seller provided any pictures? It's easy to tell from the chamber side which head you've got.

BTW, the exhaust ports on the '302 heads aren't very good. Magnum heads are much better in this regard, but the Magnum heads cost more to use. Never the less my 3250 lb '66 Dart ran 14.6s with '302 heads, zero deck KB pistons and a very mild mechanical cam very much like the HP-273. Oh, 3.55s, 4-speed and stock early A-body exhaust manifolds too.

I just got a picture from him on my phone. It's from the top side. I'm hoping he'll send another. I need to transfer it over to the computer to be able to really see anything. If these are in good shape and not cracked I will buy them. I'm not building a race car, and it will never see any track time... I would keep the heads I've got if it weren't for screwing with the messed up threads.

EDIT: I just noticed they have valves and springs, but no rockers or shafts. Will the rockers shafts and pushrods work from my '67?

yes on the shaft and rockers, yours will work

a set of good 302 on you older 318 is a good upgrade for a stock type build
it will up the CR some to boot

the mag heads need some mods to fit and work out the rockers and oil thru PR

you want any of the pre mag heads 85 up

I have used them on a cople 360s for low end torque and pulling power in a truck

I did bump the valves up to 1.88/1.60
with a home pocket port

ask for a shot of the cumbustion chamber side,it will have a hart shape to it with a point inbetween the valves..closed chamber

you can reuse all your stuff and just bolt the heads on after clean up and seals and valve job

they have retainers on the exhast spring, you can round up 8 more intake retainers springs to drop them as they hinder valve lift when going with a bigger cam

any measurements on the cc's of the combustion chamber of the 302 cylinder heads?

are the intake port volumes more or less
than the 153 cc's of the Magnum cylinder heads?
