'72 W200, 4x4.

Occasionally, when turning a sharp right I'll get a horrendous clanging from the front right of my truck, that seems to change speed with the trucks' speed. Once I straighten out it goes away. It's also done it a few times while backing and turning right.

I've pulled/prodded everything I know how to, and it all seems tight. ball joints, wheel bearings, u-joint(s), tie rod(s), all seem fine. I also don't see any obvious signs of metal on metal contact.

I did discover a couple weeks ago that the hub on the front right was locked while in 2x4

My dad (who had the truck for the last 25 years) said it 'likes to eat front u-joints'.

Could it be the u-joint not liking the extreme angle?

How wide are the front rims? I put 14x7s on the front of my Satellite and I had the same problem, looked at everything, couldnt figure it out. It would do it at a gentle left, not sharp usually. Turned out on the drivers side the edge of the rim was just kissing the upper control arm at the right angle.

Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat

Checked that. Nothing obviously hitting each other.

I did notice a tiny bit of movement in the u-joint on that side. Everything was still on the ground though, so I couldn't turn the wheel.

Most likely the u-joint then?

Looks like your dad knows that truck pretty well. He's probably right.

Get the hub so it unlocks and the clanging will most likely go away. For some reason that I can't explain, the ujoints bind at a much smaller steering angle with the hubs locked.

It's unlocked now, and still does it occasionally while turning. The joint does look very dry, so it's probably just binding up.

When it was locked, it would do it going straight. Imagine doing 55 then CLANG CLANG CLANG

yay, for another project to finish before winter

Check the wheel bearings. Also, What is the front suspension on a W200? Leaf springs? Four-link?

Also, I've heard of the noise coming around (albeit not in the front) when the LSD goes bad in the rear.
