I had the Arrow up on stands, working on the wheelie bars and I noticed the left tire could be moved in and out...The axle is sliding inside of the bearing. The only thing that stopped the axle from coming out was the pressed on retainer. Gear oil was also leaking, don't know yet if it was coming from between the axle and the bearing or through the bearing. BTW these are Strange axles.
I am heading to ART for some bearings this morning, I need to press the locking collar and remove the bearing and measure the axle, I am hoping that it's just a bad bearing and did not wear the axle. I'm guessing both are pretty hard material and not sure which would wear first to the point that the bearing has lost press. I pulled the right side, and the collar was about 3/4" away from the bearing but the axle is not sliding on the inside the bearing like the left side.
Should I tack the collar to the axle? I really don't want this to happen again, but I also don't want to compromise the integrity of the axle by welding on it. I was going to tack it with a Tig to hopefully only have localized heating.
Anybody seen this before?? Thanks, John

I had the same thing happen on an 8 3/4 years ago.It had the Green bearings and Strange axles. Mine ended up being a lock collar that was bad or defective.I put the new on with red Loctite and never had another problem There is no way I would weld on an axle,Loctite might not be the proper way,but it worked for me.

Press collar on correctly and use sleeve or retainer seal from Permatex. Some times the axle flange bearing seat area is too deep and needs a shim to keep the axle from moving in and out, check that also.
Thank You Again!!!

I have a strange ultimate 60 and the bearing seat area on their axle housing ends are too deep! I called and asked for their specs and their specs are too deep for use with the green bearing with retainer plate. I had to machine spacers to fit between the green bearing and the bearing seat area. I used remnants from an old DANA housing axle tube!

We usually make a aluminum spacer. Most axle manufactures do not recommmend weld of any kind on the axle shaft.

I had a problem with the collars not staying in place on my Strange axles. I had a shop tack weld them, problem solved.
Dave, were you running a spool in the Duster?
