This weekend I'm going to make the Dakota frame fit the 1940 Dodge Coupe body. I will be using the whole Dakota frame, as the original frame is almost beyond use. I may use a small rear section of the original frame to cap the Dakota frame and provide a place to mount the rear bumper. I wanted to see what you guys thought of the way I was going to shorten the frame. I need take out about 4", I will double check the measurement before I make any cuts. See the picture to see how I'm thinking about cutting it and putting it back together. After welding it back I will plate the inside of the frame, and then box it for good measure. Thoughts? Comments? Death threats?

It will work the way you have it layed out but we have also just cut straight down and welded it back together and then boxed the inside of the frame.
This would be my biggest concern getting your two cuts down the length of the frame both straight so you could match things back up when you are done. That means you have to make four cuts on each side of the frame rail straight (top and bottom of each section you plan on keeping) then you have to bring the two sections of frame back and square keep it all square. It will work but I can see a lot of trimming happening unless you have some seriously steady hands or quality equipment.
What Ron did seems easier and with the addition of plates and boxing the frame you should have a solid result (with good weld penetration obviously).

I understand the concern with making multiple straight cuts, but I think I could manage those. Cutting it straight would definately be easier, though. We'll see I guess, just kind of thinking and weighing my options. Quote:
if you are just going to shorten 4" what about moving the rear axle forward and just cutting off the back of the rails
The frame has an arch.... here's the best pic I could find...

Thanks guys!! I've already got a pair the front body mounts fabbed up and tacked on, not 100% if they are where they are going to stay, height wise. Looking much better though! Last night I took the leaf springs and rearend out, I need to move the leaf springs under the frame, they interfere with the body subframe and I don't want to cut into that. After I get the leafs springs shuffled around, I can build the rear body mounts and set the rear of the body down over the frame, which should drop the car pretty heavily. After I get all that stuff done I figure I'll take a few more update pictures, because it will really start to look like a car! Quote:

There are three different wheel bases, mine was the shortcab longbed which was 123.9 inches.

hey scott, looking good any updates?
Progress has been a little slow the last week, but I have been busy in the time I've had...
I got the rear springs knocked out and the spring hangers knocked off the side of the frame, which took longer than I expected.
I made new front spring hangers and with the Dakota's leaf springs and aftermarket rear shackles I got the 8 3/4" rearend mocked up under there. I haven't welded anything yet, but I think it's going to work out nice.
I took a couple pictures last night, but didn't get a chance to get them off the camera.
I also found a rear swaybar in the shed that I bought years ago that was advertised fitting an E-body but it didn't, it looks like it might be a nice fit for this project!
