How long is a 4 speed 8 3/4 driveshaft for a Challenger?? I assume engine and year shouldn't matter but its a 73 with a small block.

Interesting,

After measuring by bottoming the slip yoke, withdrawing it 1" and measuring center to center I am needing a 46.375" long shaft. The one that I took out (is damaged) measures 46.625.

Quite a bit different than the chart. My car is a 73, with a 65-67 B body 8 3/4, a magnum 360 crate and an E-body A833. Quite the hodge podge of parts but shouldn't be any different, right?

Whoa,

There is some major conflicts on that chart. Perhaps the lengths are true to the P/N's but I see a difference of 3.8" between a 1970 340 4 speed 8 3/4 challenger to a similarly equipt 73 Challenger.

What gives? I guess I will be safest with my own measurement.

I know the axle ID should say 7 1/4, not 8 1/4 on some applications, where do you see the "73 difference" that you speak of?

HOLLANDER shows:
1973 Challenger (also used '71 & '72)
45-25/32" x 3-1/4" dia. - (HOLLANDER #1093) - #2996 142 (727/833 & 8-3/4" axle w/small yoke)
49-7/8" x 3-1/4" dia. - (HOLLANDER #1083) - #2996 146 (904 & 8-3/4" axle w/small yoke)

GG's "white book" shows the driveshafts (same lengths) to be used in '74 also.

IF YOU HAVE LARGE YOKES, YOUR REQUIRED LENGTH WILL BE DIFFERENT!

HOLLANDER shows:
1970 Challenger (also used '71 & '72)
45-19/32" x 3-1/4" dia. - (HOLLANDER #1088) - #2883 656 (727/833 & 8-3/4" axle w/LARGE yoke)

P/N 2996146 71-73 challenger 727/833 w/ 8-3/4 49.89" long.

I suppose I should simply go with my measurement of 46.37". Its .585 longer than what the '73 book calls for. If I went with a stock 73 shaft in my car now the slip yoke would be pulled out 1.585" from bottom which I think is a bit too much. Perhaps thats how the factory did it??

Like I said, the car is a hodgepodge of parts. Magnum motor, b-body rear with DrDiff offset hangers. I suppose approx .5" difference between the factory spec and what I have now is pretty darn good considering.

Just out of curiosity, why would a large joint shaft be a different measurement? Because the slip and pinion yokes being different lengths? I was thinking about having a new shaft made with 7290 yokes and use conversion parts for now and upgrade the slip/pinion yokes later. But that doesn't seem like a good idea if the 7290 parts I get later are different dimensions...

Yes they are larger, both in width & depth (looks like 3/16" total).

Are you taking the measurement with the car on the ground? The centerline of rear axle rotation isn't the transmission tailshaft. Modified rear car height (springs, air shocks, shackle length, etc.) will change the dimension. A little here and there adds up.

The car on jack stands under the rear housing.

Shaft is being made now. Hopefully it's the cure for my vibration problem.
