A friend of mine has a fluid damper (fliudampr) off a 440. I'm building a 528 hemi. Will the damper work on the hemi?

IMHO, those dampers are better suited to low rpm steady state industrial applications. I won't run them.

, nothing but bearing problems when i ran one, my bearings after 60 passes were all smeared, i raced the beaerings, same thing again. i went to a ATI super balancer and no more wiped bearings. they are junk for any decent HP motor.

Then my junk low powered 7500+ rpm motor must be the exception or maybe I got a good one.
it's easier to just blame the damper.

the complaints I have heard on the Fluid Dampener are all from the northeast states where it gets cold, it seems that the fluid in the Fluid Dampeners turns to jelly in the cold and does not keep in the liquid form like it is normally, which makes the motor go out of balance and does cuase damages. A lot of the 500 C.I.Pro Stockers ran them for years They didn't race in the cold either
guess you didn't read eddie's story of 5 or so broken cranks in circle track motors down here. swapped it out with an ATI and no more broken cranks.

If the engine is balanced properly, why would you ever need a fluid dampener?
every engine needs some sort of dampener to dampen harmonics, which all engines have. it's really just a question of which "type" of dampener to use.
Quicktree,i remember reading one of Eddie's posts with something to that effect. keep in mind those are mid to high to mid to high to mid, etc, etc. high rpm SBC motors with the tiny little snouts on them. IMO, that's not a good environment for any fluid type dampener, regardless of brand. also note that fluid dampers are much heavier typically than the ATI, Romac, BHJ, etc. etc. that heavy rotational inertia could have something to do with the problem Eddie had. those dampers aren't normally my first choice, but so far, every one i've used (probably over 100 of them) has worked just fine.

A couple of points: The fluid in a Fluidamper isn't a fluid, it's a gel. The damper is for torsional vibrations, it has nothing to do with the balance of the motor. Elastic type dampers will work best at a certain frequency of vibration and the effect will diminish the farther you get from that number. I expect that the viscous (fluid) type dampers will be effective over a wider range of engine speeds.
