My sons 2002 Neon 2.0L 5-speed lost 3rd gear,there was no noise, all the other gears and the clutch work fine. The shifter feels normal like its going into gear,but no 3rd. Has anyone had this type of transmision appart? Is there an easy fix? All info would be appreciated.

Here is the most likly case in a gear box missing a gear. The gear that is not there is on a ideler shaft and the shaft has broken in two. A 5spd mustang trans will do that b/c a few gears are on the main shaft then others off to the lower side are on an ideler shaft. You may need to look at pix of the inside to think it out more.

I would double-check all connections between the shifter and the trans first. I seem to recall hearing there was shifter bushing issue, but maybe that was with first gen Neons.
