Who is making 500hp out of a small block? I would like engine combo info. How reasonable can you put a potent small block together for? Thanks in advance everyone. Was planning on stroking the motor. oh yeah...on pump gas too

Scott Smith just built one but the idea was for it to look stock. It was with stock 340 exhaust manifolds and maybe stock intake. IIRC, W2 heads for a stock look. He broke something on the dyno though.
Use the search function for "scott smith" on the race forum for 3 months back. There is a really good thread on it.

360 block .030 over (408), Eagle cast crank, H beam rods, forged pistons (internally balanced), Ported Edelbrocks with Scorpion rockers - .600 lift, custom ground cam, M1 intake, custom tuned carb... 10.5:1 compression.
500 hp (@5800 rpm)/510 ft lbs. (about 2400 rpm) on the dyno, cost was about $8500 including dyno session.
Do it all right the first time, or you'll have to do it again like I did. If you want cheap, I'd recommend shooting for 425 hp, hyper-eutectic pistons, stock rods, and non ported Edelbrocks. You could probably save at least $2,500 that way.

Stock crank, I beam forged Scat rods as the machining consistancy is better than Eagle, who wants to resize new rods?? KB forged pistons shooting for 9.5:1, perfect circle low tension oil rings, napier second rings. Gap them for nitrous per ring manufacturer instructions. I'd say a cam around 220@.050 on intake 230@.050 on exh. with a 114lsa installed at 110 intake centerline. Single plane intake and a 750 carb. Then spray it to get where you want. Pretty simple and strong combo. I know NA this will at least make 400hp without even being optimum.

I remember you had some engine issue, but didn't follow it at the time.
What did you do different the first time that you didn't do (or want to do) the second time. What went wrong the first time?

How about Ryan J. He should have at least a dozen combos for small blocks cranking out 500 HP. I think he could do it in his sleep.
I like the easy route 408, solid cam, 360-1 heads, 850 carb. 1.25 horse per cube.
Snap your neck, mega G-force launch, is all I want!

Unless the heads are ported to a tee for the combination, I doubt seriously you'll get 400hp out of a stock stroke 360 with such a short duration at .050 camshaft. An XE268H (224/230) in a combo like that has a tough time making 360hp.
10:1, ported ede's, xs282S solid cam, victor 340, 950hp will get you close to 500.
There was a 340 built with a similar combo, only bowl clean up, no significant porting, that made 465-470hp.
More reliable, toss a 4" arm in it and use the cubes and a decent head to get 500hp.

If you can turn the rpms, with a cam in that size range, you can easily reach 400hp. If you're not at 400 hp or better, the combination is wrong or a compromise was made. Crap, with a 198@.050 .460 lift stock cam at rocker and very light port job I did, I ran a 13.4 corrected et in a 4klb truck. That's anywhere from 350-360 at the crank and I'm not even done tuning yet. I still have a 2" downpipe coming off the shorty headers too.Based on past experience porting and flowing magnum heads, the heads I'm running should flow 240-250cfm at around .500 lift.

RT Dan, Can I get all the spec's on your build? what block and cu. in. did you start with? And can someone educate me on cam's lift, duration? I see all these different numbers, I know what they do but don't know how I would know which cam is perfect for my specific build. Thanks for all the info so far Those EQ heads seem to be a nice piece for the money..

Didn't notice you said magnums. Ported magnums would get you close.
I know that x/j heads and that cam selection won't get up there. That's the combo I was thinking about.
