I am in the process of purchasing a 71 barracuda 340 with a 4 speed.(project car)The motor and tranny are not original to the car. Both are in the car.
My question is "how can i tell if it is a hemi or a 23 spline tranny?" casting, serial #'s?
owner is not sure, which is a good indication it is probably a 23 spline...

If there are 23 splines on the input shaft it would be a REAL good indicator that its a 23 spline tranny !!!!!!!!!

18 splines = hemi box.

No serial number and casting number is iffy , for it to have been a hemi box on the back of a small block trans alot of swapping of parts would have had to occured as the bearing retainer that fits in a smallblock bellhousing and the only trans like that would have been a 66-67 hemi trans and it doesn't have an ebaody friendly tailshaft .

I'll go out on a limb and say it's NOT a hemi box in that car .

While not an absolute, pull the inspection cover off and look, you might be able to see the splines (and they look quite a bit different). Also you could look at the main bearing retainer, it is larger on the hemi ones (although the big blocks got the same ones).

While difficult, it should be possible to get a figure up and feel the splines you can tell the difference... - I have not tried though...

Also a 340 did not get the 18 spline, nor the big input shaft bearing, so it is not very likely (from what I remember from a conversation with Jamie Passon)... - although I have a big block 4-speed in my 340 73 cuda - but at one point someone machined the bellhousing out...

Pull the side cover and compare the gear tooth counts.
