I got a small hole in one of my Goodyear 14x32 slicks this weekend. It's about 1/3 of the way in from the edge or from the center. I used a pug that I had in the trailer, cut it off flush with the tire surface. Then I did a big burn out to see if it would hold and then just drove easy down the track and it held just fine. So I went ahead and raced with it keeping my eye on it each burn out.

I made about 5 passes before I lost so now I'm trying to figure out if I can patch it and use it the rest of the year and how others have done it.

I've heard of some of the tire shops have a plug/patch that plugs the hole and patches the tire on the inside and I would think that would be best.

I've spoke to a friend of mine who has plugged 2 of his slicks and ran them the until they wore out and never had a problem.

So I'm looking for input from guys that have experiance with patching a slick so I'll have a better idea what to do next. I really don't want to have to buy new slicks, they only have about 50 passes and I'd have to buy 2 so they would match so I really don't want to go that round if I don't have to.

I also don't want to hear just opinions, I want to hear from people who've had experience, 1st or 2nd hand. I know the safest thing is to replace them but I don't think that's necessary.

Thanks in advance..

I plugged a slick once and never had an issue with it. Used it until it wore out. An inner patch would be better, but a plug will work. CHIP

I've had to plug several sets of slicks and the plugs have always held without a problem.

Replace it, sorry. You are going too fast to race on a patch. Slicks are very thin, how could you plug it? I have had no luck patching it years ago, your tires get pretty hot during burnouts which doesn't useally happen with street tires. Sorry

Plug patch is the way to go.

My M/T frontrunner has a patch in it, but I have never had to patch a slick. Have a tube with a couple of patches on it. If you patch it just dismount it and get a scotch brite pad on a angle gringer and rough up the area to patch. Glue it down and press out all the air under the patch. It should hold all day for you.

I had a fire extinguisher pin go through my Good Year slick after I won a round on Saturday night at an E-Town National event. Didn't know it until we opened the trailer the next day. The guy I beat the night before gave me a plug to fix it. It worked O.K. but we put a patch inside after the race and it stayed there until the tire wore out.

I have patched them from the inside. Use a die grinder and grind/clean all the rubber around the hole. Put the cement on and lite it on fire, blow it out and apply patch. Mine has held great for over a year, 160mph+ 1.18 60'.

why wouldn't you just put a tube in there and you wouldn't have to worry about a patch or your safety?

Like several of the other guys have done, I've put a plug in one and ran it that way until the tire wore out, without any problems.

Depends on how large and damaging the hole is.It has been done with success.I would rather check the inside of the tire to see if any chords are unravelled first then decide.
