I want to put some louvers in the hood of my truck, to get some more air flow to the top of my air cleaner. I've got one of those Summit air cleaner lids that allows air to flow straight down in the top of the carb. I don't want a cowl hood, or a six pack hood scoop, just some nice clean louvers, it should be a little more low key, i.e. can't see it from the stands, or from a distance.

How does one make the nice hot rod louvers? I've got a body shop buddy, and he's never done them. Who does them?

Michael

Old school is to lay them out, drill a small hole in each corner then slice across the holes and hammer and dolly. Looks rough and requires a real skill.
The other, best way to do them is to use a louver press. pics here

The hood better be straight before this, and preferably bare metal. You really don't want to do all the prep work around the punched louvers!!!

Check local rod shops.

You also have to consider any internal structure behind where you want them. The nature of the press also requires a flat or nearly flat surface.

There are cheesy bolt-on ones that are best left to posers, and some will take an already punched section of metal and replace a section of the skin. This requires a lot of metal work the deal with the shrinking and warping.

Wow, someone in Iowa that does louvers? Can you tell me where he is at? I don't want that many louvers on the hood of my truck, just mainly some right above the air cleaner. A little hot rod, a little old school, and a little incogneto all at the same time.
